Job description

Project Management & Construction (PMC) is responsible for building Duke Energy's next generation of power infrastructure and supporting one of the largest capital investment programs in the company's history. As Duke Energy works to meet growing customer demand and advance a reliable, affordable, and increasingly cleaner energy future, PMC is actively constructing utility-scale solar generation, battery energy storage facilities, natural gas generation, advanced nuclear, pumped-storage hydro, and other emerging energy technologies across the company's service territories. PMC serves as Duke Energy's owner organization for project execution, bringing together multidisciplinary teams to transform approved investments into operating assets. PMC leaders are responsible for construction delivery and managing the project portfolio by jurisdiction and from an enterprise-wide perspective.

Position Overview

Reporting to the General Manager of Portfolio Management and the Project Management Center of Excellence (PMCoE) within PMC, the Lead Business & Technical Consultant supports the full PMC project portfolio. The role coordinates cross-functional work, advances portfolio performance, monitors and reports metrics, and leads initiatives across System Planning and Construction. The successful candidate will maintain an enterprise and portfolio mindset, provide effective oversight and governance, and ensure that leaders and stakeholders remain aligned and informed. This position serves as a subject‑matter expert in business‑specific processes and data, plans and manages improvement initiatives across PMC, and leads projects spanning multiple functions and processes. The consultant designs, revises, and implements solutions that meet PMC and enterprise needs; independently applies tools, methodologies, and governance structures aligned with business objectives; and provides advice on strategic and highly complex work. The role converts data and process information into insights that advance project management and construction for the generation modernization portfolio.

Key Areas of Focus
  • Craft solutions to complex business and portfolio challenges.
  • Partner with business teams to understand their needs and develop effective solutions.
  • Serve as a thought leader in portfolio management and project execution.
  • Lead the analytics workstream for a portfolio of execution projects.
  • Create business intelligence products, dashboards, visualizations, and advanced analytics reports that clearly communicate the business narrative and provide practical, actionable, and analytically supported recommendations with material impact.
  • Partner with Information Technology teams to prototype and demonstrate products for internal stakeholders.
  • Expand monthly portfolio tracking and reporting for interconnection, transmission, supply chain, and project handoff activities.
  • Support the management of jurisdictional A3s and the related decision‑making process arising from jurisdictional planning.
  • Track and monitor strategic and financial approvals, including schedules and reporting for Core Team, TRC, SMC, and Board of Directors activities.
Responsibilities
  • Provide business and technology expertise to identify, analyze, and resolve high‑impact, complex, and cross‑functional issues at the corporate or industry level.
  • Plan and coordinate high‑impact, complex business and technology studies and projects, applying extensive technical and business expertise.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and verbally, and maintain accurate records and files.
  • Develop productive working relationships and coordinate activities with leaders across PMC and supporting business units to understand business needs.
  • Frame problems with stakeholders and define the analytical context and scope needed to produce timely, useful results.
  • Coordinate with subject‑matter experts and conduct structured interviews to obtain valid information and data for analysis.
  • Lead working sessions to develop alternatives and evaluate uncertainty, value, and risk preferences.
  • Present analytical results and conclusions clearly to decision‑makers in written and oral formats.
  • Develop recommendations that are practical, actionable, materially impactful, and supported by analytical models and data.
Additional Responsibilities – Information Technology Partnership
  • Identify opportunities to collect new data.
  • Design new processes and build large, complex data sets.
  • Develop strategies for new uses of data and its interaction with data design.
  • Conduct studies involving new and diverse data sources.
  • Identify new uses for existing data sources.
  • Develop, test, validate, and refine predictive models to optimize construction management, reporting effectiveness, and other business outcomes.
  • Build web prototypes and create data visualizations.
  • Implement automated processes that efficiently produce scalable models.
  • Design, modify, and build new data processes.
Basic/Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Business Administration, Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Analytics, Mathematics, Business, Statistics, Information Technology, Engineering, or another related discipline.
  • Nine years of related work experience.
  • In lieu of a bachelor's degree and 9 plus year's experience, HS/GED and 15 plus years relevant work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Utility industry experience.
  • Excellent working knowledge of PMC work processes.
  • Budgeting or financial analysis experience.
