Job summary

BUNNELL LAMMONS ENGINEERING (BLE) seeks a seasoned Department Manager for Construction Materials Testing Services in the Charlotte area. You will lead technical and operational teams, drive client relationships, and shape BLE's regional strategy with a focus on quality and accountability.

With PE licensure and 8+ years in materials testing or inspections, you will manage budgets, staff development, and project delivery while aligning with BLE's CREST values and ownership culture.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required; advanced education or specialized training in construction materials testing and inspection preferred.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
• 8+ years of progressive experience in construction materials testing, special inspections, or related engineering consulting, including technical and operational leadership, project management, staff development, and client and business development.
• Established relationships within the Charlotte metropolitan area and surrounding markets strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated experience managing field-testing and inspection programs, laboratory operations, and multidisciplinary teams of technicians, inspectors, project managers, and engineering staff.
• Strong working knowledge of applicable ASTM, AASHTO, ACI, ICC, and DOT standards, testing procedures, certification requirements, and quality-management practices.
• Experience maintaining laboratory accreditations, technician certifications, equipment-calibration programs, and regulatory compliance.
• Participation in BLE’s Senior Professional Program will be required to qualify as a final reviewer, execute contracts, and manage technical risk on behalf of the firm.
• Demonstrated experience managing project financial performance and familiarity with departmental budgeting, profitability, utilization, and resource planning.
• Working knowledge of consulting agreements, project risk management, and contract administration.
• Demonstrated ability to develop strong client relationships, generate repeat business, and contribute to the pursuit of new consulting opportunities.
• Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and decision-making skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Construction Materials Testing Services Department's operational, financial, and strategic management in the Charlotte area.
• Supervise department staff; oversee field and laboratory operations; ensure adherence to corporate standards and policies.
• Develop client relationships and lead business development efforts to expand BLE’s local practice.
• Recruit and mentor staff; manage profitability, budgeting, utilization, and resource planning.
• Serve as liaison between corporate leadership, internal departments, and external clients to support growth and client satisfaction.
• Position itself as an owner and firm-wide leader within BLE for long-term success.
