Job summary

Haven Behavioral Hospital of Philadelphia is seeking a Full-time Lead Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) to support nursing staff and oversee BHTs on the floor. The role focuses on maintaining a therapeutic milieu and safe patient care across a 7a-7p day shift with rotating EOW schedules.

The Lead BHT will implement de-escalation, monitor safety checks, document observations, and mentor new staff while adhering to Joint Commission and state regulations.

Responsibilities

• Continually monitors and enforces unit rules.
• Uses de-escalation and therapeutic interventions as needed.
• Manages patient environment and completes unit safety checks.
• Trains and precepts new Mental Health Technicians.
• Follows infection control policies.
• Implements patient care activities under supervision of licensed nurses.
• Records vital signs, weight, ADL and nutrition; communicates findings to the nurse.
• Assists with laundry, meals, bathroom functions, and belongings.
• Assists patients with mobility needs.
• Tailors care to age, disability and cultural needs.
• Documents patient observations and significant occurrences.
• Communicates care outcomes and follow-ups to nursing staff.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

The Lead Behavioral Health Technician (Lead BHT) supports the nursing staff and oversees the other BHTs on the floor in maintaining a therapeutic milieu by performing routinely assigned tasks and carrying out patient care activities within the scope of training and experience. This position will maintain a safe and professional standard for patient care in accordance with Joint Commission, Federal and State regulations, Oceans' Mission, policies and procedures and Performance Improvement Standards.

Essential Functions:

1. Continually monitors and supports compliance with unit rules.
2. Demonstrates the ability to employ de-escalation and therapeutic interventions as needed.
3. Responsible for management of the patient environment and oversight of completing unit safety checks.
4. Makes self available to staff; provides regular performance feedback; develops subordinates' skills and encourages growth. Trains and precepts new Mental Health Technicians.
5. Complies with standard and universal precautions and infection control policies.
6. Implements patient care activities under the direction and supervision of licensed nursing personnel.
7. Performs vital signs, weights, ADL, nutritional monitoring, and communicates findings to the nurse.
8. Assists patients with laundry, meals, bathroom functions, and maintaining of belongings as needed.
9. Assists at-risk and physically challenged patients with mobility needs.
10. Individualizes all patient care activities to the age specific, disability, and cultural sensitivity needs of the patient.
11. Communicates and documents patient observation.
12. Documents significant occurrences, observed behavior, vital signs, nutrition intake, and patient observation findings on assigned patients and as requested by the registered nurse, according to policy.
13. Communicates outcome of assigned tasks to nursing staff.
14. Communicates follow-up on patient care responsibilities; incomplete assignments, ongoing activities, and current patient needs to relevant staff to assure continuity of care.
15. Performs other duties and projects as assigned.
