Job summary

Cognito Systems, a PSI joint venture, is seeking a Lead Athletic Trainer to join the Army’s Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) program at Joint Base Lewis‑McChord in Tacoma, WA. You will lead athletic training services and coordinate with the Brigade H2F team to optimize performance and reduce injuries.

This on‑site role focuses on injury prevention, education for Soldiers, and alignment with the Brigade training calendar, with a salary of $85,000–$87,000 plus relocation assistance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree accredited by CAATE and BOC certification.
  • Master’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or Sports Medicine.
  • CAATE‑accredited program graduate with BOC and NPI credentials.
  • Unrestricted state license/registration/certification to practice athletic training.
  • Five years of athletic training experience with active populations (military, athletes, etc.).
  • U.S. Citizenship; ability to pass background check and drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as Brigade Lead Athletic Trainer and advisor on injury control and performance optimization.
  • Coordinate with H2F team to support Soldier training programs.
  • Ensure AT scope aligns with Brigade training calendar.
  • Provide ATC overview brief for in-processing Soldiers and development with ATC team.
  • Maintain safe operation of equipment, track supplies, and report needs.
  • Prepare Monthly Status Reports with recommendations and lessons learned.
  • Attend meetings with Brigade leadership and H2F personnel; review notes as needed.
  • Submit reports to Brigade Program Director and Injury Control Director.
  • Act as Cognito Systems liaison with Project Manager.

Job description

Cognito Systems, a joint venture with Planned Systems International (PSI), is looking for a dedicated and skilled Lead Athletic Trainer to join the U.S. Army’s rapidly expanding Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) program at Joint Base Lewis McChord located in Tacoma, WA.

This role is more than an athletic training position; it offers an opportunity to contribute to the Army’s largest human performance optimization initiative, helping achieve a 23% increase in ACFT pass rates, reduced musculoskeletal injuries, and improvements in behavioral health.

Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities
  • Serve as Brigade Lead Athletic Trainer and principal advisor to the Injury Control Director on basic acute care, injury control, reconditioning, and performance optimization.
  • Coordinate with Brigade H2F Strength and Conditioning team, master Fitness Trainers, and Brigade Command Sergeant Major to support unit development and execution of training programs for Soldiers with and without physical limitations.
  • Ensure education, instruction, and guidance to Soldiers and Brigade leadership within AT scope of practice is synchronized with the Brigade training calendar.
  • Provide ATC overview brief for in-processing new Soldiers, including:
    • AT introduction and description of services offered, reasons to seek AT services, and locations/hours of availability.
    • Development in collaboration with the ATC team, with the lead responsible for organization and completion.
  • Ensure safe and effective operation of equipment, track supplies, and report deficiencies or needs to the Brigade Program Director.
  • Complete Monthly Status Report highlighting recommendations, best practices, and lessons learned.
  • Attend and participate in meetings with Brigade leadership; if absent, review meeting notes/information.
  • Prepare and submit reports as requested by the Brigade Program Director and/or the Injury Control Director/clinical supervisor.
  • Attend and participate in meetings with other H2F Performance Team members and medical personnel as requested or required.
  • Perform other tasks within the scope of the AT position description, as assigned by the Brigade Program Director and/or Injury Control Director/clinical supervisor.
  • Ensure that all ATCs complete documentation, Monthly Status Reports, peer reviews, and other required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Participate in H2F Program reviews to identify best practices, lessons learned, and recommend opportunities for improvement.
  • Act as the point of contact for Cognito Systems, relaying information and working with the Project Manager as requested.
Minimum Requirements
  • Degree: Bachelor’s degree accredited by CAATE; Master’s degree in a related field (e.g., Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Medicine) from an accredited university.
  • Education: Graduate of a CAATE-accredited program, passing BOC score for Athletic Trainer, National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • Certification: Unrestricted state license/registration/certification in any of the 49 regulated states, DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, or US Virgin Islands to provide health care within the scope of practice for Athletic Trainers.
  • Experience: Five years of relevant Athletic Training work experience, including work with active populations such as military, high school, collegiate, professional sports, performing arts, or occupational health.
  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship.
  • Credentialing: Ability to pass background check and drug screen; current physical and immunizations.
Physical Demands
  • The role is dynamic and on‑site, requiring adaptability in a fast‑paced environment. Duties and priorities may shift throughout the workday, with hands‑on interaction with soldiers during training or recovery. Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds, spend time on feet, in the elements, and carry supplies.

Compensation
