Job summary

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Lead Assembly Technician for the SPARC project on the 2nd shift. You will oversee technicians, coordinate daily assembly tasks, and ensure safe, high-quality completion of large-scale components such as coils and vacuum vessels.

The role requires 7+ years in technical assembly, 2–3 years leading teams, and experience with lifting operations and joining methods. 2:00 pm–10:30 pm shift with $32–$52/hr plus 10% shift differential.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years in a highly technical assembly role (aerospace, semiconductor, oil & gas, power plants, wind, racing & automotive).
  • 2–3 years overseeing a team of five or more.
  • Experience completing large scale projects end to end.
  • Experience supporting lifting operations.
  • Knowledge of standard joining and integration methods (bolted interfaces and flanges, welding, epoxies, etc.).
  • Highly self-motivated, organized, and safety conscious.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate daily activities of technician teams to complete assembly operations per schedule.
  • Review work orders including mechanical, welding, electrical, and lifting tasks.
  • Participate in major on-site operations such as critical component lifts and movements.
  • Perform visual inspection buy-off for tasks completed by technician teams.
  • Provide daily status updates to the Assembly team on operations and completed work orders.
  • Assign technicians or teams to specific operations and adjust assignments based on schedule priorities.
  • Coordinate with out-of-house teams working on specialized sections of SPARC assembly to ensure efficient integration.
  • Troubleshoot assembly issues and develop workarounds or escalation as needed.
  • Notify Assembly Engineers of problems or need for non-conformance reports.
  • Coordinate with the Assembly Testing Team on ongoing or upcoming activities to ensure daily operational efficiency and safety.
  • Lead daily kick-off and shift-change meetings to communicate tasks, major events, safety hazards, and priorities.

Join the power movement as Lead Assembly Technician

As a Lead Technician on the Assembly Team at CFS, you will oversee and organize small technician teams to conduct all assembly activities to construct the SPARC Tokamak. This includes handling, alignment, and mechanical integration of large electromagnetic coils, vacuum vessels, instrumentation systems, support structures, tooling and manipulation equipment, diagnostic systems, and superconducting cable bundles into a tightly integrated central device. You will use extensive experience building and handling large equipment, structures, or plant systems to facilitate efficient, high-quality completion of SPARC. You will organize day-to-day work orders per schedule, assign technicians, provide shift briefs and hand-offs, and guide all activity in the assembly work areas. You will collaborate with engineers, metrology, quality, and other team members to ensure correct and precise completion of components and to identify and resolve issues during the build process.

The Schedule

2ND shift - Hours: 2:00 pm - 10:30 pm (hours subject to slight adjustment of one to two hours). Rate of pay: $32 - $52 per hour + 10% differential.

What You'll Do

What We're Looking For
  • High school diploma or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years in a highly technical assembly role (examples: aerospace, semiconductor, oil & gas, power plants, wind, racing & automotive)
  • 2 to 3 years overseeing a team of five people or more
  • Experience completing large scale projects end to end
  • Experience supporting lifting operations
  • Knowledge of standard joining and integration methods (bolted interfaces and flanges, welding, epoxies, etc.)

Bonus Points For
  • 10+ years in a highly technical assembly role

  • Forklift operation certification or experience
  • Ability to use basic machining tools (lathe, mill)
  • Tooling Designs - Experience With JIRA, Manufacturo, Or Other software-based tracking systems
  • Experience organizing rigging and direct oversight of heavy component lifts
  • Knowledge of rigging and lifting best practices
  • Knowledge of vacuum systems and clean room practices
  • Knowledge of cryogenic systems
  • Prior experience designing and construct
