Job summary

Optum, part of UnitedHealth Group, is seeking a senior software engineer to design, build, and maintain full‑stack applications using Next.js, React, and TypeScript. You will develop AI‑enabled features, integrate LLM capabilities, and refine backend services for scalability, security, and reliability in a cloud‑native Azure environment.

Qualifications

• We require a bachelors degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, or 4+ years of equivalent software engineering experience.
• We require 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, including full stack development.
• We require 3+ years of experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and cloud-native deployment models.
• We require 3+ years of experience with Next.js/React, TypeScript, and modern frontend architectures.
• We require 3+ years of backend development experience with Node.js or comparable server-side frameworks.
• We require 3+ years of experience working with PostgreSQL or other relational databases.
• We require 3+ years of experience building and deploying applications on Microsoft Azure.
• We require 3+ years of experience working with RESTful APIs, authentication and authorization, and secure application design.
• We require 2+ years of experience integrating AI/LLMs into applications, including prompting, orchestration, and API-based solutions.

Responsibilities

• We design, build, and maintain full-stack applications using Next.js, React, and modern TypeScript practices.
• We develop and integrate LLM-powered features such as summarization, search, assistants, and decision support using established AI frameworks and APIs.
• We architect and refine backend services and APIs with a focus on scalability, reliability, and security.
• We create and manage PostgreSQL data models and queries with attention to performance and data integrity.
• We deploy, monitor, and operate applications on Microsoft Azure, including App Services, Containers, Functions, Storage, and AI services.
• We apply best practices for cloud architecture, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and cost efficiency.
• We collaborate with architects and AI engineers on system design, model integration, and platform capabilities.
• We produce clean, testable, well-documented code and set the standard through code reviews and technical discipline.
• We mentor junior engineers and help shape technical decisions and solution direction.

with a salary range of $145,500 to $249,500 annually based on full-time employment. This role can be performed remotely from anywhere in the U.S., with an office requirement of at least four days per week for hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area.
