Job summary

UAB Medicine seeks a lead clinician to supervise advanced practice providers and participate in routine clinical care under physician supervision. The role screens and assigns responsibilities, ensuring high-quality patient care within Alabama regulations.

The ideal candidate has a Master’s in Nursing with ACNP or PA-C with extensive practice experience, plus active BLS certification and possible ACLS/PALS as required. UAB offers a robust benefits package and growth opportunities.

Job Description

To serve in a lead capacity and perform supervisory duties for a group of advanced practice providers within area(s) of responsibility. Depending upon area(s) of responsibility, may also lead and supervise nurse clinicians. To perform routine clinical care duties within established scope of practice to patients as assigned by and under the direction of the collaborating physician (Section 610-X-5 of the Alabama Board of Nursing Administrative Code) or under supervision of a Board-Certified Physician (Section 540-X-7 of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners Administrative Code). The collaborating physician shall be available for direct communication for consultation and referral or arrange for the same medical coverage by a physician who is pre-approved by the State Board of Medical Examiners in the same manner as the collaborating physician of record.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• 1. Develops work schedules, approves vacations, personal holidays and absences due to illness.
• 2. Interviews and recommends hiring of qualified candidates for vacant positions.
• 3. Plans and coordinates orientation of newly hired staff and completes appropriate documentation of the orientation process.
• 4. Maintains written documentation of staff performance and conducts performance appraisals.
• 5. Ensure quality assurance process and documentation by advanced practice providers and collaborating physicians are in compliance with the Board of Medical Examiners and Alabama Board of Nursing guidelines.
• 6. Effectively responds to concerns of physicians, advanced practice providers and nursing staff.
• 7. Promotes professional development of team members and self.
• 8. Demonstrates organizational and leadership skills to serve as a role model to enhance unit operations.
• 9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Master's degree in Nursing with an Acute Care NP certification, or graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program and three (3) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Licenses / Certifications / Registrations:

• Currently certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) with Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) Specialty by the Alabama Board of Nursing or licensed as a Physician Assistant by the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners with certification as a Physician Assistant (PA-C) by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants required.
• Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or should be obtained within 30 days of employment.
• Depending on the unit/department, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required.
