Leachates Technician
About the Role

The Leachates Technician is responsible for performing leachate extractions on environmental samples using EPA Method 1311 (TCLP), EPA Method 1312 (SPLP), ASTM leaching methods, and Zero Headspace Extraction (ZHE) techniques. This includes operating rotary extraction equipment, preparing reagents and extraction fluids, and completing sample preparation activities in accordance with prescribed methods and standard operating procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Perform TCLP, SPLP, ASTM‑based leaching procedures, and ZHE extractions in accordance with approved methods
  • Operate and maintain rotary extraction equipment and ZHE apparatus to ensure proper extraction conditions
  • Prepare and handle soil, sludge, and solid waste samples for leachate analysis
  • Prepare extraction fluids, buffers, and reagents required for EPA and ASTM methods
  • Load, secure, and monitor extraction systems to ensure proper agitation time, pressure conditions (for ZHE), and method compliance
  • Filter and transfer extracts for further laboratory analysis
  • Assist with bottle preparation and sample management as needed
  • Assist with inventory control activities including receiving, supply ordering, stocking, and auditing
  • Learn and utilize laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and other software required to process data
  • Accurately document preparation and extraction details in controlled logbooks, bench sheets, and electronic systems
  • Prepare extraction batches and review for compliance, completeness, and accuracy
  • Develop an understanding of QA/QC requirements, including method blanks, duplicates, spikes, and control samples
  • Recognize and maintain safe working conditions; handle hazardous materials and use appropriate safety equipment
  • Operate, inspect, and perform routine maintenance checks on rotary extraction units and ZHE systems
  • Maintain proper handling techniques to prevent volatilization losses during ZHE procedures
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment
  • Perform other duties as assigned and directed
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Dedication to supporting the goals, objectives, and philosophies of ALS
  • Commitment to cross‑training across laboratory functions
  • Understanding leaching procedures (EPA 1311, 1312, ASTM) and ZHE techniques, with the ability to recognize atypical conditions and assess impact on data quality
  • Strong work ethic and ability to function as part of a team
  • Familiarity with computer systems; working knowledge of Excel preferred
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques (balances, pipettes, quantitative sample transfer)
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced laboratory environment
  • Willingness to work weekends as needed
Required Qualifications
  • 4‑year degree in a scientific discipline or relevant science coursework/experience (experience with leachate extraction, ASTM methods, or ZHE) preferred but not required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate with managers, clients, and team members
  • Strong commitment to quality, safety, and data integrity
Physical Demands
  • Ability to stand for extended periods (up to 8 hours)
  • Ability to lift and handle sample containers as required
  • Ability to communicate clearly with coworkers and supervisors
