Job Duties
  • Attends a basic P.O.S.T‑certified academy that provides an overview of the criminal justice system, including training in laws, police procedures, law‑enforcement techniques, first aid and physical fitness.
  • May be assigned to non‑sworn police work while in academy or while a background investigation is being completed.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Obtains and maintains a valid driver’s license.
  • Is prepared to work required shift, on‑call and standby schedules, and travel to different sites.
Job‑Related and Essential Qualifications
  1. Knowledge of safe driving principles and practices; ability to operate a motor vehicle safely; ability to learn to operate modern office equipment.
  2. Skill to learn modern police methods and procedures related to patrol, apprehension, arrest, search and seizure, traffic control, investigation, interviewing and interrogation techniques.
  3. Ability to successfully complete a P.O.S.T‑certified police academy and to understand federal, state and local policies, interpret and explain City and Department procedures, prepare clear reports, analyze situations quickly, act calmly in emergencies, meet physical requirements, exercise good judgment, communicate clearly and foster positive working relationships.
Minimum Qualifications
  • One year of experience working with the public.
  • Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade; additional education desirable.
  • Must be 20 years of age at the time of submitting application and 21 by graduation from the academy or by hire as a sworn officer.
  • Physically capable as determined by a P.O.S.T. medical examination, including maintaining weight and fitness standards, and successfully passing background, polygraph and psychological examinations.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.
  • Good moral character with no felony convictions or serious misdemeanor offenses.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver’s license.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 100 lbs.
  • Exposure to cold, heat, noise and vibration; outdoors/ confined spaces; chemicals, explosives and mechanical hazards; electrical hazards; willingness to travel and to work shift, on‑call, and standby schedules.
