Job summary

Livingston County in Howell, MI seeks a Law Clerk / Attorney Magistrate to support District Court Judges with daily operations, including legal research, drafting opinions, and courtroom duties. The role includes on-call magistrate responsibilities, bail determinations, and sentencing within statutory jurisdiction.

Requirements include a Juris Doctorate, Michigan bar admission, and a valid Michigan driver's license.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate Degree required and some prior experience in the practice of law is preferred.
• Licensed to practice law in Michigan and in good standing.
• Michigan Vehicle Operator's License.
• Must live in the County per State of Michigan law to perform Magistrate duties.
• Strong knowledge of district court procedures, case law research, and judicial administrative rules.

Responsibilities

• Review case files, conduct legal research, draft bench memoranda and opinions.
• Schedule docket, contact attorneys, organize files and meetings.
• Attend courtroom proceedings to provide research and analysis.
• Assist the judge with daily operations, answer calls and track cases.
• Confer with attorneys, plaintiffs, and defendants regarding proceedings.
• May serve as back-up court recorder.
• Conduct arraignments and set or deny bail.
• Perform on-call duties including issuing warrants and bail.
• Advise the district court administrator on legal matters.
• Maintain ongoing knowledge through continuing education.
