Job summary

SpaceX is seeking a Laser Tracker Toolmaker (Starship) to build and improve mechanical systems and tooling at our Starship facilities. You will interpret GD&T on assemblies, collect data with laser trackers, and guide tooling operations through data-driven analysis.

You’ll collaborate with fabricators, engineers, and machinists, ensuring safe practices and top-tier quality while supporting large-structure fabrication and testing programs.

Job description

LASER TRACKER TOOLMAKER (STARSHIP)

In this role, you will work as part of an elite team building and improving the mechanical systems and tooling operations at our Starship manufacturing and launch facilities. You will directly contribute to the success of the Starship program and all test flights and missions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Use in-depth familiarity of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to interpret blueprints at all assembly levels
  • Collect geometric data using laser tracker through model-based software such as Verisurf
  • Discern how best to establish a reference system for the current task then apply it and install it both on and off the part
  • Provide analysis of collected data and evaluate it to provide direction for remaining tooling operations
  • Integrate process monitoring with fabrication processes to locate welding and machining details
  • Apply the fabrication process on large structures and understand the environmental effects such as free states, temperature swings, and weld shrinkage
  • Effectively communicate to fabricators, machinists, assemblers, engineers, and other parties as required
  • Ensure operations can be performed safely while meeting SpaceX quality standards
  • Maintain an orderly environment that retains maximum utility for all team members

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalency certification
  • 2+ years of millwright, machining or industrial mechanic experience
  • 2+ years of professional experience working with laser trackers or other 3D measurement equipment

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate degree in applied science
  • 2+ years of experience with metrology software (Verisurf or equivalent)
  • Experience analyzing data and generating data reports
  • Experience using inspection tools and equipment such as, micrometers, gauge blocks, dial indicators, height gauges, optical comparators, profilometers, and CMM
  • Experience with Leica laser trackers
  • Strong understanding of geometric relationships
  • Understanding of the manufacturing process of large structures from concept to completion
  • Ability to precision locate machines and details in extreme environments
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to visualize 3D space and integrate complex geometries on both large and small fabrications
  • Ability to use and learn a variety of software to observe, analyze, evaluate, and communicate pertinent information
  • Demonstrated leadership and dependability
  • Ability to adapt to an extremely dynamic work environment while maintaining a positive attitude
  • Ability to find solutions to complex problems using critical thinking while drawing from previous experience
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of safety on the job site and bring new ideas of how to continue to work safely and effectively in new locations and changing environments
  • Desire to integrate with teams that can make rapid changes and provide valuable skills to its cohesion and effectiveness

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be willing to work all shifts, overtime, and/or weekends as needed
  • Stand: Up to 10 hours per day
  • Sit: Up to 3 hours per day
  • Push/Pull: Up to 75lbs. (unassisted) 2 hours or longer per day
  • Overhead reach: Up to 3 hours per day
  • Walk: Up to 3 hours per day
  • Lift/Carry: Up to 50lbs. (unassisted) 2 hours or longer per day
  • Climb (ladder/stairs): Up to 3 hours per day
  • Kneel/Crouch: Up to 6 hours per day
  • Upper body twist: Up to 6 hours per day
  • Ability to work in temperatures over 80 degrees 6 hours or greater per day
  • Candidate must be capable of safely using an air purifying respirator, operating heavy equipment and machinery, and performing the physical requirements of the job listed in the job description. Candidate may be required to complete a pre-employment questionnaire and/or physical to confirm these capabilities, which may include a medical history review.
