Technique is seeking a Laser Technician to join our Jackson, Michigan facility. You will set up, program, and operate 2D flat-sheet and 5-axis laser cutting systems to process sheet metal blanks, stampings, and tubing in stainless steel, carbon steel, and aluminum.

You will perform first-piece inspections and adjust programs to meet tight tolerances while keeping equipment running at peak performance for high-speed prototype and low-volume production work.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of laser cutting experience in a manufacturing setting.
• Ability to read blueprints and understand GD&T notation.
• Experience with fiber or CO₂ laser systems; 5-axis trimming is preferred.
• Experience with CNC programming and nesting software.

Responsibilities

Job description

Technique is looking for a Laser Technician to join our team at our Jackson, Michigan facility. This position reports to the Laser Supervisor in the Laser department. This role sets up, programs, and operates 2D flat-sheet and 5-axis laser cutting systems to cut and trim sheet metal blanks, stampings, and tubing in stainless steel, carbon steel, and aluminum. The employee will perform first-piece inspections, make program and fixture adjustments to hold tight tolerances, and keep laser equipment running at peak performance to support high-speed prototype and low-volume production work.

The ideal candidate brings 2+ years of laser cutting experience in a manufacturing environment, with the ability to read blueprints and understand GD&T notation. Hands-on experience with fiber or CO₂ laser systems (such as TRUMPF), CNC programming and offline nesting software, and 5-axis trimming of formed parts are critical factors in this role.

Responsibilities:

• Set up and operate lasers – Set up and operate 2D flat-sheet and 5-axis laser cutting systems, including loading material, selecting nozzles and lenses, and verifying machine parameters for each job.
• Program and edit laser jobs – Create, edit, and optimize laser programs and nests using CNC/CAM software to maximize material yield and cycle time.
• Trim formed parts and tubing – Build and set up fixtures to accurately locate and laser trim stampings, formed parts, and tubing.
• Perform first-piece inspections – Perform first-piece and in-process inspections using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and CMM reports to verify parts meet print and GD&T requirements.
• Troubleshoot and adjust – Diagnose cut-quality issues such as dross, burrs, and dimensional variation, and adjust power, speed, focus, gas pressure, and part offsets to correct them.
• Maintain laser equipment – Perform routine preventive maintenance including cleaning optics, replacing nozzles and consumables, checking gas and chiller systems, and reporting issues to maintenance.
• Maintain job documentation – Maintain accurate job documentation, setup sheets, and program records for all production runs.
• Follow laser safety practices – Follow all laser safety, lockout/tagout, and PPE requirements and keep the work area clean and organized.
• Train and support team members – Support and train operators on machine setup, operation, and part quality expectations.
• Other duties as assigned – Perform other duties as assigned by the Laser Supervisor.

Requirements:

• High School Diploma or GED; vocational or technical training preferred
• 2+ years of laser cutting experience in a manufacturing setting
• Experience with fiber or CO₂ laser systems; 5-axis laser experience strongly preferred
• Experience with CNC programming and nesting software
• Ability to read blueprints and understand GD&T notation
• Ability to use hand tools and precision measuring/inspection tools
• Basic computer skills
• Strong attention to detail and mechanical aptitude
• Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
• Basic problem solving skills
• Ability to frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds
• This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and reaching throughout the shift
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
• Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with exposure to fumes or airborne particles, laser radiation hazards, compressed gases, moving mechanical parts, industrial equipment, vibration, and loud noise
• No travel required for this position
• Must be eligible to work in the United States

Position Type and Expected Hours:

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a minimum of 40 hours per week with overtime as needed. Note: days and hours required may vary. Shift premiums are available.

Shifts include:

• 1st Shift – Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM
• 2nd Shift – Monday through Thursday, 3:30 PM to 2:00 AM
• Weekend Days – Friday through Sunday, 5:00 AM to 5:30 PM
