Job summary

Focused Energy in Austin, TX is seeking a hands-on Laser Scientist to lead bench-level laser experiments for the FELA program. You will set up the laser front end, run two-dimensional SSD, frequency tripling, FM-AM, and amplifier characterization, while maintaining meticulous lab records.

Collaborating with laser scientists, you will troubleshoot, schedule experiments, and ensure safety in a Class 3B/4 environment.

Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with fiber and free-space laser systems, nonlinear optics, beam characterization and alignment.
  • Comfortable working independently on bench-level setup, alignment, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong lab notebook and data documentation habits.
  • Knowledge of laser safety standards (ANSI Z136) and Class 3B/4 laser environments.

Responsibilities

  • Own hands-on setup, alignment, and execution of assigned FELA laser experiments (front end setup, SSD, frequency tripling, FM-AM, amplifier characterization).
  • Lead bench-level troubleshooting and drive day-to-day experimental schedule.
  • Ensure all laser safety protocols and lab safety standards are followed in a Class 3B/4 environment.
  • Build and maintain organized lab records covering equipment status and experimental data.
  • Improve experimental setups and procedures based on hands-on experience.
  • Collaborate with laser scientists on joint sessions to enable progress.
