Description

Under supervision, perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled landscape maintenance duties in the care of the University’s landscaped areas; provide a safe and appropriate environment, facilities and outdoor classrooms for the use and enjoyment of students, faculty, staff and visitors; perform maintenance and repair functions in the care of landscaped areas and related facilities. Job functions include but are not limited to: maintaining and repairing irrigation systems, conducting brush abatement services (brush management/vegetation management/modification), properly operating and maintaining a variety of landscape maintenance power equipment and machinery and, selective pruning of shrubs, trees and any other plant material, fertilizing, planting, turf maintenance and litter pickup. All work to be completed in accordance with University policy, requirements and guidelines.

3 of the 8 positions will report to a Brush Abatement team, who will work on brush management, vegetation management and modification across the university. The remaining positions will be responsible for maintaining and manicuring landscapes and related facilities across the university and off-campus.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain and repair irrigation systems; create irrigation schedules and program controllers per horticultural and water-conservation principles.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of landscape maintenance power equipment and machinery; perform selective pruning of shrubs, trees and other plant material; fertilize and perform turf maintenance; collect litter.
  • Ensure work is completed in accordance with University policies and guidelines.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated landscape maintenance experience with knowledge of methods, tools, materials and equipment. At least one year of relevant work experience or a combination of education and experience as a Landscape Technician or Groundskeeper at a University, College, Hospital, Municipality, or other large facility.
  • Experience with Southern California plant material and understanding of their cultural requirements, pests and diseases; ability to identify undesirable plant material.
  • Experience maintaining and repairing irrigation systems; ability to create irrigation schedules and program controllers.
  • Experience safely operating common landscape equipment (mower, edger, blower, hedge trimmer, line trimmer, etc.) and power-driven machinery; familiarity with trenchers, aerators, tractors, roto-tillers.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work well in a multicultural environment.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities; ability to follow through on assignments.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions; good problem-solving and judgment.
  • Capability to perform heavy, physically demanding work, potentially in adverse weather conditions.
  • Basic experience using computer systems, including Microsoft Office, work order systems (e.g., Maximo), email and web-based applications.

Special Conditions
  • Required to hold a valid driver’s license and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.
  • DMV and DOJ/FBI background clearances required prior to employment.

Pay Transparency

Annual Full Pay Range: $43,952 - $57,963 (prorated for appointment percentage). Hourly equivalent: $21.05 - $27.76.
