Job description

This is a full-time, FLSA non-exempt position with Carson City Public Works located in Carson City, Nevada. Under immediate supervision, provides a variety of landfill maintenance and operations duties required for efficient and effective service to landfill customers and the City.

Employees may choose between the following:

Employer-Paid PERS Retirement: $27.5193 - $38.5271 hourly / $57,240.04 - $80,136.42 annually

Employee/Employer-Paid PERS Retirement: $33.1990 - $46.4784 hourly / $69,053.92 - $96,675.02 annually

  • Operates heavy equipment necessary for landfill operations; maintains equipment in a clean and functional operating condition.
  • Operates water truck to perform dust control and fire suppression activities as required.
  • Operates gatehouse; utilizes automated scale system; calculates and collects amount due for waste loads.
  • Directs vehicle traffic at the landfill.
  • Maintains landfill shop, catch fences, and buildings.
  • Performs snow removal as required.
  • Performs basic clean-up of site and facilities as required.
  • Enters and retrieves data and prepares reports using a computer; reviews such reports for accuracy and makes corrections as required; operates standard office equipment.
  • Observes safe working practices, including maintaining work areas in a safe condition.
  • Uses standard office equipment, including a computer, in the course of the work.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as a member of a work team.
  • Keeps basic records of work performed, time sheets, etc.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with the public and City staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED; AND two (2) years of heavy equipment operation experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:

  • Valid Class A driver's license with tanker endorsement within 18 months of hire
  • Must take pre-employment physical examination and Respiratory Fit test

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Policies and procedures of the landfill unit.
  • Use of specified computer applications involving word processing, data entry and/or standard report generation.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Under Immediate Supervision - Incumbents at this level are closely supervised in essentially all aspects of their assigned work with the exception of routine and basic tasks. Work methods are generally prescribed in specific terms. They usually follow an established routine with general assignments, and their work is subject to frequent reviews. A position may involve repetition of a limited number of tasks that after initial training and review warrant only occasional supervisory re-view.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Mobility to work in a field setting, use standard office equipment and stamina to sit and walk for extended periods of time; agility to navigate uneven terrain; strength to lift and carry up to 80 pounds; work at height up to seventy-five (75) feet; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone; work is subject to exposure to weather conditions, fumes, dust and hazardous chemicals.

Employees must maintain an active telephone. Employees must reside within 30 minutes of Carson City. Employees must be willing to work overtime, shifts, weekends and holidays. May be required to be on-call.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  1. All new employees will serve a probationary period of twelve (12) months. Such employees are not subject to the collective bargaining agreement and may be laid off or discharged during this period for any reason.
  2. Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
  3. Any City employee may be required to stay at or return to work during emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned response position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the incident and/or emergency.
  4. Employees shall be required to complete Incident Command System training as a condition of continuing employment.
  5. New employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation which cost the new employee $47.00 and a drug screen which costs $84.00. Employment is contingent upon passing the background and the drug screen.
  6. Carson City participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each applicant's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.
