Montgomery County, Tennessee, Clarksville landfill is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to manage safe, efficient operation and care of large waste handling machines. You will work under supervision, maintaining equipment, adhering to safety standards, and supporting ground preparation, receiving, distribution and movement of waste.

The role requires a High School diploma or equivalent, and a valid Driver’s license with CDL.

Qualifications

  • Four (4) years of heavy equipment operation experience, or equivalent
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Driver’s license and a valid CDL, required
  • Pre-employment background check and drug testing required

Responsabilités

  • Operate heavy equipment including Motor Grader, Dozers, Trash Compactor, Off Road Trucks, Dirt Compactors, Track Loaders and Trackhoes
  • Repairs leachate breakouts
  • Build liner pads, lay pipe, install ditches and gas lines
  • Grade and prepare roads for vehicle use
  • Perform earth work including grading and slope excavation
  • Respond to emergency calls (fire, etc.)
  • Perform labor tasks (shoveling, raking, trenching)
  • Assist in road construction and utility checks
  • Move dirt, grade, trench, backfill and compact waste
  • Pick up litter around landfill
  • Inspect equipment daily for safety and maintenance
  • Ensure compliance with safety and county/local codes
  • Work overtime, weekends, holidays as needed

This position is responsible for safe, efficient operation, and care of heavy solid waste equipment for the ground preparation, receiving, distribution and movement of waste at the landfill in a safe and sanitary manner.

Responsibilities

Department: Bi-County

Pay Grade: 80, Non-Exempt

Starting hourly rate: $24.45

Four (4) years of heavy equipment operation experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

High School diploma or equivalent.

Certifications, Licenses:

  • Must hold a valid Driver’s license and a valid CDL.
  • A pre-employment criminal background check and submission to drug testing for commonly abused controlled substances is required.

This position is responsible for safe, efficient operation, and care of heavy solid waste equipment for the ground preparation, receiving, distribution and movement of waste at the landfill in a safe and sanitary manner.

GENERAL POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties are normal for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all–inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned.

Responsibilities include operating Motor Grader, Dozers (various sizes), Trash Compactor, Off Road Trucks, Dirt Compactors, 973 Track Loaders, Trackhoes and other track excavating equipment.

Repairs leachate breakouts

Uses equipment to build liner pads, lay pipe, install ditches, install gas lines.

Grades and prepares roads for vehicle use.

Performs earth work, including grading and slope excavating.

Responds to emergency calls for fire etc.

Performs labor work including shoveling, raking, and trenching.

Aids in construction of roads, checks dams, utilities, waterways, and rock structures through the safe operation of construction machinery.

Machine operations include moving dirt, grading, trenching, backfill, clearing land, placing rock, and using machine attachments, pushing and compacting waste properly.

Picks up litter around the entire landfill site that has blown from the working face.

Performs other general maintenance and clean up duties as needed.

Inspects equipment daily for safety and maintenance.

Ensures all work is done according to standard practices, design specifications, and County and local building codes.

Ensures all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adheres to all County safety regulations; ensures all regulations pertaining to the safe use of equipment are understood and followed.

Reports all accidents to the appropriate authority. Follows all policies for reporting.

Able to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Other duties as assigned.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no fiscal responsibilities.

Represents the Department and County to other County staff and members of the public.

Provides quality customer service to individuals needing directions or assistance.

SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS:

Works under direct supervision of the Team Leader. Incumbent has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

JOB QUALIFICATIONS – KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Basic practices, methods, and equipment used in recycle collection and processing.

Operation and maintenance of all power-driven equipment required to collect and process recycle material.

Practices, methods, and materials used in grounds maintenance and general maintenance work.

Personal Protective Equipment.

Working knowledge of occupational hazards (OSHA) and safe work practices.

Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

Excellent public contact and customer service skills.

Traffic laws and ordinances.

Skill in:

Reading, following and understanding GPS coordinates and information.

Operating and maintaining all assigned vehicles or equipment.

Performing a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and janitorial tasks.

Reading and interpreting policy and procedure manuals.

Organizational and time management to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.

Applying judgment and discretion in resolving problems and interpreting policies and regulations.

Ability to:

Perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits requiring minimal direction and supervision.

Establish and maintain accurate records of assigned activities and operations.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Work the allocated hours of the position.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work environment includes frequent exposure to wet or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and outdoor weather conditions.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS/ACTIVITIES:

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of lifting/moving or force and occasional lift, move or drag 75 pounds or more while performing essential functions of the job.

Work regularly requires the ability to stand, walk, sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; balance, stoop,kneel, crouch or crawl; and speak and hear.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.

Acceptable verbal and conversation skills to effectively communicate with others in English.

Ability to read and write English and interpret documents such as safety rules, material safety data sheets, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth.

Ability to recognize occupational hazards in work activities and take safety precautions.

Work is frequently performed in a noisy environment around mechanical equipment.

Work may include outdoors in seasonal weather extremes.

Exposures could include toxic chemicals, seasonal temperature extremes, bodily fluids, infectious diseases and hazardous waste; treated human feces, and other possible unknown hazardous materials.

Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and following directions.
