Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated Land Use and Environmental Associate to join our practice. The position supports land use, environmental permitting, and regulatory compliance matters for public- and private-sector clients. The Associate will provide legal analysis, draft permits and entitlements, advise clients on environmental law and land use planning, and work closely with project teams to advance development objectives while managing environmental risk. This role is ideal for a licensed attorney with experience in land use and environmental law and an interest in CEQA and NEPA matters.

Compensation:

Up to $275k base + $200k in bonus potential ($475k total comp)

Key Responsibilities

• Counsel clients on land use, zoning, entitlements, and environmental regulatory compliance for private development and public projects.
• Prepare and review legal documents including permit applications, environmental impact analyses, entitlements, mitigation agreements, conditions of approval, and regulatory filings.
• Conduct legal research and provide written and oral guidance on federal, state, and local land use and environmental laws and policies, including CEQA and NEPA where applicable.
• Advise clients through land use approval processes, administrative hearings, and permitting timelines; coordinate with planners, engineers, consultants, and agency staff.
• Draft and edit memoranda, opinions, client advisories, and negotiating positions related to project approvals, mitigation measures, and environmental compliance.
• Assist in litigation support and administrative proceedings as needed, including preparation of declarations, exhibits, and pleadings.
• Manage multiple matters and client relationships, track deadlines, and ensure high-quality, timely legal work product under supervision of partners or senior attorneys.
• Participate in business development activities, including preparing proposals, client presentations, and CLE or community outreach related to land use and environmental topics.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active bar admission; admitted or eligible to practice as an attorney.
• Demonstrated experience as an Associate or similarly responsible role handling land use and environmental matters for public or private clients.
• Strong knowledge of land use law, local planning and entitlement processes, permitting, and environmental regulatory frameworks; practical experience with environmental compliance.
• Excellent legal research, writing, analytical, and oral advocacy skills, with the ability to prepare clear, client-focused advice and documents.
• Experience working on CEQA and NEPA matters is highly desirable (nice to have), including drafting environmental documents and coordinating with regulatory agencies.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines, work collaboratively on multidisciplinary teams, and communicate effectively with clients, agencies, and stakeholders.
• Detail-oriented, proactive, and capable of independently handling complex regulatory and transactional issues; familiarity with administrative hearings and litigation support a plus.
• Willingness to travel to project sites and agency meetings as needed and to participate in firm business development and professional activities.
