Job summary

St Johns River Water Management District seeks personnel to operate and maintain land management equipment at its Geneva Field Station in Florida. Responsibilities include fire line work, prescribed burns, timber marking, cruising, and habitat restoration using tractors, bulldozers, airboats, and support vehicles.

The role requires a Florida Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain it within six months, plus at least one year in natural resource work.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and one year of experience in natural resource management required.
• Must possess a valid Florida Class A CDL with Tanker (N) endorsement or obtain within six months of hire.
• District will pay for Entry-Level Driver Training program leading to CDL; reimbursement for ancillary costs.

Job description

Job Summary : Operates and maintains land management equipment under a wide variety of conditions to provide support within the Bureau of Land Resources.

Job duties include :

• Installs and maintains pre-suppression fire lines; ensures fire lines comply with applicable Silvicultural Best Management Practices (BMPs); provides dozer and plow stand by support during prescribed burning operations; and assists with wildfire suppression activities.
• Assists with forest and land management projects, including timber marking, timber cruising, site preparation, and reforestation activities; conducts wildlife and vegetation surveys, trail maintenance, and boundary maintenance; and coordinates with contractors to ensure compliance with contract specifications.
• Operates and maintains equipment used in support of fuel management and habitat restoration projects, including farm tractors equipped with mowers, roller choppers, harrows, tillers, mulchers, marsh master, airboats, and other specialized equipment.

Ability to:

Ability to read and interpret maps and aerial imagery; make sound land management decisions and recommendations; and effectively communicate with a diverse range of individuals in various situations.

Skilled In:

Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of John Deere 650 bulldozers or equivalent equipment; the operation and maintenance of transport vehicles equipped with air brakes and both manual and automatic transmissions; and the operation and maintenance of farm tractors and related implements.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

Performs fieldwork under adverse environmental conditions, including extreme heat and cold, rain, rough terrain, and exposure to natural hazards. Participates in prescribed burning and wildfire suppression operations; operates and transports a variety of vehicles and equipment, including trucks, ATVs, tractors, and airboats; assists with invasive species management; and completes occasional overnight travel as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or G.E.D. and one (1) year of experience in natural resource management required. Must possess a valid Florida Class A CDL with Tanker (N) endorsement or obtain the required license and endorsement within six (6) months of hire.

The District will pay for the Entry-Level Driver Training program through a provider of the District’s choice leading to obtaining a CDL. The District will reimburse for ancillary costs such as those associated with the issuance of the license. After the initial Entry-Level Driver Training program paid by the District, if a CDL is not obtained, the employee will be responsible for the cost of subsequent training.

SJRWMD has determined this to be a mandatory-testing position as described in Section 440.102, Florida Statutes and the Commercial Motor Vehicle Drug Testing Program as described in 49 CFR Part 382. Licenses:

Valid State of Florida Driver’s License.

Valid Florida Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire, or the ability to obtain the license and endorsement within six (6) months from the date of hire.

Salary Range: $40,872.00 - $51,084.80
