Job summary

Carilion Clinic seeks an experienced Lactation Consultant - RN to coordinate and provide lactation care in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The role emphasizes comprehensive documentation, patient advocacy, and collaborative care planning.

You will work with a multidisciplinary team and support evidence-based lactation practices in Roanoke. The position requires RN licensure, IBCLC within 12 months, and a minimum of one year maternal/child experience in acute care.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree preferred.
• AA Nursing or Allied Health Care Field required.
• RN licensure required; IBCLC within first 12 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and provide individualized lactation care in inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Document care accurately and timely in the medical record.
• Educate patient and family on breastfeeding and infant care; adjust plan as status changes.
• Collaborate with health care team to develop interdisciplinary care plans.
• Lead and participate in quality improvement and performance improvement activities.

How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare:

• As part of the health care team, assumes primary accountability for the coordination and provision of individualized lactation care for patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Utilizes delegation and critical thinking skills to provide quality service through a team oriented, collaborative approach to patient care.
• Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates breastfeeding in order to achieve optimum patient outcomes for mother/infant dyads as appropriate to service area.
• Ensures complete, accurate and timely documentation of care.
• Collaborates with members of the health care team/patient/family to develop, implement, and evaluate an age-specific interdisciplinary plan of care.
• Revises plan according to changes in patient status.
• Patient/family (caregiver) educational needs are identified in a timely manner, incorporated into the plan of care, implemented and documented appropriately.
• Consistently demonstrates the role of patient advocate, protector of patients rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support.
• Applies knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
• Uses and cares for breastfeeding equipment and devices appropriately.
• Completes appropriate activities related to the rental or sale of all items in the Lactation Retail Center.
• Maintains professional conduct and practices in an ethical manner, accountable for professional actions and legal responsibilities.
• Maintains professional conduct and practices in an ethical manner adhering to the Standards of Practice and the IBLCE Code of Ethics.
• Maintains and expands knowledge and skills by participating in continuing education activities.
• Obtains certification no later than 2 years after employment.
• Maintains current IBCLC.
• Determines and performs within clinical, leadership, and/or education pathways to support (direct/indirect) evidence-based, quality patient care service and performance improvement.
• Exhibits clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances.
• Plans strategies to reduce length of stay, turn around time, resource consumption and improve patient outcomes.
• Functions as role-model for clinical practice to coworker, student and physicians.
• Manages resources, establishes priorities, and modifies environment to meet patient care needs.
• Completes manager/director predetermined projects within specified time frame and according to preestablished guidelines.
• Uses problem-solving methods to facilitate resolution to patient and personnel situations that present in the work area.

What We Require:

• Education: Bachelors degree preferred.
• AA Nursing or Allied Health Care Field required.
• Experience: One year maternal/child experience in an acute care setting in which lactation skills were utilized is required.
• Three years are preferred.
• Licensure/Certification: RN required:IBCLC required within the first 12 months of hire into this position.
• Other: Must successfully complete orientation and competency requirements.
• Must obtain/maintain CPR.
• Must be able to meet essential job functions.
• Compensation Range: $36.87 - $55.31 Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience.
• The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
