Job Summary

As a Laborer, you will support and assist underground construction crews with the installation, maintenance, relocation, and repair of underground telecommunications network infrastructure. The role involves manual labor, material handling, and maintaining site safety and cleanliness. Responsibilities vary by level, ranging from basic tasks to equipment operation and jobsite oversight. Position levels range from Laborer to Laborer III based on experience and certification.

Responsibilities

• Conduct manual labor activities such as digging trenches and holes with a shovel, exposing existing underground utilities, greasing equipment, and maintaining a clean and safe work zone.
• Install utility pedestals, cabinets, and hand holes.
• Handle materials, including conduit, fiber/cable pulling, and installation.
• Perform site restoration and cleanup activities, including grade preparation, black dirt removal, seeding, and concrete restoration.
• Maintain safe working habits and conditions in accordance with all regulations, procedures, and policies.
• Set up safety perimeter using signage, cones, and safety barriers.
• Demonstrate knowledge of Midco’s safety program by enforcing safety rules, wearing appropriate safety apparel (e.g., hard hats, safety vests, OSHA‑approved boots), and operating all equipment safely.
• Model Midco’s mission, vision, values, ethos, and Leadership Success Drivers, inspiring others to do the same.
• Ensure customer privacy by adhering to Midco’s privacy guidelines and following company policies and procedures.
• Maintain reliable and predictable attendance as required by the position.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED) or a minimum of two years of equivalent work experience.
• Complete Construction First Time (FTR) certification within 60 days of hire and consistently apply principles in all aspects of work.
• For Laborer I and above: possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record, meeting all applicable Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements in the operating state(s). This may include obtaining and maintaining a DOT medical card if required by law or company policy. A DUI conviction within the past five years will result in disqualification from employment in these positions.
• Develop working knowledge of construction, the National Electrical Code, OSHA regulations, state and local regulations, and general safety standards.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience working on the installation of underground telecommunications or utility infrastructure.

Team members will be assigned a level based on required experience and training. Advancement is sequential and contingent on successful completion of all requirements at the preceding level, including certifications, demonstrated proficiencies, and time‑in‑role or equivalent experience where applicable.

Laborer

• No experience required.

Laborer I

• Operate and drive a company vehicle in compliance with all Midco policies, ensuring safety, efficiency, and adherence to traffic laws.
• Maintain vehicle cleanliness and ensure regular maintenance and repairs as scheduled to uphold a professional image.
• Understand all locate flags/color codes and their meanings.
• Work effectively in various weather and environmental conditions without issue.
• Operate skid steer, VAC, and small equipment safely and efficiently.
• Understand and perform vacuum operation and related tasks under supervision.

Laborer II

• Have nine months in role or equivalent work experience with knowledge of underground utility construction.
• Restore a jobsite fully to Midco standards.
• Operate the VAC independently in accordance with all safety practices and procedures.

Laborer III

• Have eighteen months in role or equivalent work experience with knowledge of underground utility construction.
• Understand and operate equipment such as mini excavator, drill, and locator.
• Understand jobsite operations (why and how drilling occurs) and provide limited jobsite oversight as directed by leadership.

Work Environment

• Noise level is moderate to loud.
• Frequent exposure to outside weather conditions.
• Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, high or precarious places, risk of electrical shock, radiation, and vibration.
• May be required to work more than 40 hours per week and outside normal business hours, including holidays, evenings, and weekends, as business demands.
• May be required to travel up to 50% of flexible scheduled hours per business needs.

Physical Demands

• Reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
• Lift and carry loads up to 80 lbs and handle a 75‑lb ladder.
• Use a ladder rated for a maximum load of 375 lbs, including the combined weight of the individual, fall protection equipment, and any carried tools.
• Stand or sit for long periods and maneuver in small tight areas.
