Job summary

The City of Santa Fe Springs is seeking a Public Works Laborer to join a municipal crew in Northport, Alabama. This role involves outdoor, physically demanding work as part of a team performing waste collection, street maintenance, and utilities tasks.

Job description

Job Summary & Essential Job Functions

Under immediate supervision, performs work in the Public Works Department as assigned. Work is repetitive, routine, and of a manual nature.

Essential Job Functions
  • Operates as part of a garbage collection team.
  • Operates as part of a trash collection team.
  • Mows, weed-eats, and picks up trash along rights-of-way.
  • Installs water mains and fire hydrants.
  • Maintains and repairs equipment.
  • Clears large debris, including trees, from right of way.
  • Performs custodial work as needed.
  • Performs other reasonably duties in a safe manner as assigned by immediate supervisor or other supervisors as required.
Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent; one (1) year of experience in heavy manual labor; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications
  • Possession of a valid, State of Alabama driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment
  • Must maintain regular attendance on the job.
  • Must be able to work overtime and callouts as needed.
  • Must be physically capable of performing strenuous manual labor in adverse weather conditions.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in the operation of motor vehicles.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions in general construction and maintenance operations particularly as these requirements relate to work around construction equipment, trench excavations and traffic areas.
  • Knowledge of City ordinances, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
  • Skill in planning and organizing work.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
  • Skill in verbal and written communication.
  • Skill in the use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Skill in using computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
  • Skill in the operation of various types of light equipment normally used in construction.
  • Ability to organize and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time, under unfavorable climatic conditions.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow specific verbal instructions.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Required

The work is very heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
  • Hearing 2: Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Pulling/Pushing: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion. Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. May include shouting in order to be heard above ambient noise level.
  • Visual Acuity: Visual Acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures; and the ability to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is primarily performed in an outdoor environment. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, temperature and noise extremes, bright/dim light, toxic agents, disease, pathogenic substances, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, or rude/hostile citizens.
