Job description

A successful candidate will play an active role in the City of College Park’s existing operational success. The purpose of the position is to perform heavy, manual labor in the areas of water, sewer, sanitation, stormwater, and buildings and grounds. Successful performance helps ensure safe and efficient Public Works services, as well as a positive public image for the City. Independent judgment is required to identify, select and apply the most appropriate of available guidelines and procedures as well as interpret precedents. This position is responsible for performing a variety of skilled maintenance work, and operating a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of the City of College Park’s water and sewer systems.


Responsibilities:
  • Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the water and sewer division.
  • Cuts, fits, lays, repairs, taps, cleans, and flushes water mains, pipe, valves, and fittings on the repair of mains and services and installation of services, fire hydrants, water pump and lift stations; assists in shutting off broken sections of water mains.
  • Repairs and maintains City sewer lines and landscapes.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
  • Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, gravel, and sand.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor/superintendent; cleans equipment.
  • Operates light and medium-sized construction and power equipment, such as jackhammers, tampers, drills, saws, and hydraulic equipment.
  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Performs required field supervision involved in construction and maintenance projects as a crew leader, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying, and backfilling.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of City and department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the materials commonly used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities as related to assigned areas.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety standards and practices applicable to work being conducted.
  • Skill in the operation, maintenance, and routine repair of equipment used in Public Works Department, Water and Sewer Division construction and maintenance.
  • Skill in performing various manual labor assignments as needed.
  • Ability to perform general equipment/tool maintenance duties.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and efficiently carry them out with general supervision.
  • Ability to perform tasks involving heavy manual labor.
  • Effective analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse constituents.
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to one hundred (100) pounds, standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day, climbing poles, bending, crouching, or stooping, and using tools and equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishing between shades of color.

Minimum Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Some experience in heavy construction is preferred.
  • Water and Sewer experience preferred.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License issued by the State of Georgia.
  • Experience in communicating with diverse communities, and in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Extensive hours and weekends will be required at times.
