Job summary

Matrix Service Co. is seeking an apprentice to learn skilled construction tasks under the supervision of a foreman and journeyperson. The role involves site prep, material handling, and operation of hand and power tools on heavy-construction projects.

Apprentice will gain experience in trenching, excavation, concrete and asphalt preparation, weatherization, and safety procedures, with formal apprenticeship classes and required safety training throughout the program.

Qualifications

  • 0–3 years refinery maintenance experience.
  • Apprentice will participate in apprenticeship program for up to 3 years.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial safety standards and procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical schematics and manuals.
  • Must obtain and maintain drug testing program status.
  • Must pass background check.
  • Must have TWIC card.
  • Must have 20-hour high hazard facility training card.
  • Must produce a High School diploma or GED and a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Support excavation, concrete, demolition and general project activities.
  • Learn rigging, signaling, and flagging for heavy-construction lifts.
  • Identify and report hazardous materials to maintain a safe, compliant job site.
  • Gain experience in trenching and excavation tasks.
  • Assist with asbestos and lead abatement procedures.
  • Support concrete and asphalt preparation, placement and finishing.
  • Help with weatherization tasks to improve energy efficiency.
  • Complete work assignments under the close supervision of a journeyperson.
  • Attend apprenticeship classes for the duration of the apprenticeship.
  • Perform other responsibilities as required or assigned.

Job description

Work under the direction of a Foreman and journeyperson. Gain knowledge of and the ability to learn skilled construction tasks including site prep, material handling, and operation of hand and power tools. Support excavation, concrete, demolition, and general project activities while maintaining clean, safe work area.

Job Functions
  • Actively supports the Company’s commitment to safety and its “Core Values.”

  • Learn and understand rigging, signaling, and flagging for heavy-construction lifts.
  • Identify and report hazardous materials to maintain a safe, compliant job site.
  • Gain experience in trenching and excavation tasks following safety standards and grade requirements.
  • Assist with asbestos and lead abatement procedures in accordance with regulatory protocols.
  • Support concrete and asphalt preparation, placement, and finishing on heavy-construction projects.
  • Help with weatherization tasks to improve energy efficiency and protect structures from environmental conditions.
  • Ability to learn how to select the proper tools and equipment to complete a job.
  • Must be able to complete work assignments under the close supervision of a journeyperson.
  • Will be required to attend apprenticeship classes for the duration of the apprenticeship.
  • Perform other responsibilities as required or assigned.
Qualifications
  • Zero (0) to three (3) years in refinery maintenance experience.
  • Apprentice will participate in the apprenticeship program for up to three (3) years.
  • Gain a thorough understanding of Laborer type work and expertise in basic hand tools.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial safety standards and protocols.
  • Able to communicate clearly with team members, supervisors, and other departments about issues and solutions.
  • Proficiency in mechanical systems is essential, along with the ability to read and interpret technical schematics and manuals.
  • A steady hand and good hand-eye coordination are necessary for working with small parts.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial safety standards and procedures is crucial.
  • The ability to communicate clearly with team members, supervisors, and other departments about issues and solutions is important.
  • Complete the Company’s Safety training, Process Safety Management training and Client/Site specific training.
  • MUST obtain and maintain active status within the appropriate drug testing program.
  • MUST pass background check.
  • MUST have TWIC card.
  • MUST have a 20-hour high hazard facility training card.
  • MUST produce a High School diploma or GED and a valid driver’s license.
Physical Requirements
  • Employee will be standing, walking, bending, squatting and lifting.
  • Must be able to hear, speak, understand and communicate effectively.
  • May be required to lift, carry and move up to 50lbs.
  • Will occasionally work at heights, climb ladders and stairways and work off of platforms while utilizing proper fall protection and safety protocols.
  • Must be capable of working outside in the elements including but not limited to the heat, cold, rain, snow and wind; and must be able to work for long periods of time, up to 12 hours a day.
  • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs/muffs, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves and steel-toe boots.

The pay rate will depend on the successful candidate’s qualifications and prior experience, specific skill set, geographic location, internal equity, and other factors influencing pay. As such, the actual salary may fall closer to one or the other end of this range, and in certain circumstances, may fall outside the listed hiring range.

Hiring range: $21.00 to $30.00 per hour

Full range for this position, available over time:$21.00to$35.00per hour
