Job Title: Laborer

Reports To: Track Supervisor

Type of position: Non-Exempt / Hourly

Employee Classification: Regular

Location: Dillsboro, NC (various locations along GSMR track line)

Compensation: $17-24/hr., DOE, and Certification(s)

Job Summary: Lay, repair, and maintain track and bridges for standard gauge railroad equipment used in regular railroad service or plant yards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate or learn to operate track-related equipment.
  • Use tools such as chain saws, pole saws, and rail saws.
  • Assist in all phases of railroad track and bridge work.
  • Implement and ensure compliance with track equipment and highway vehicle preventative maintenance programs.
  • Perform hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical repairs and maintenance on track equipment and department vehicles.
  • Follow GSMR procedures/rules, safety programs, and operating rules strictly.
  • Perform additional duties as needed.
Qualifications

Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Valid US Driver's License required.
  • CDL preferred or ability to obtain one with DOT medical card.
  • Effective communication skills in English.
  • Ability to interact well with coworkers and customers.
  • Pass background and DMV record checks.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly.
  • Participate in pre-employment and random drug testing.
  • Pass pre-employment physical evaluation.
  • Ability to work with others and follow complex instructions.
  • Experience with operation and repair of hand tools, power tools, tractors, and heavy equipment.
  • Experience in routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment is preferred.
  • Work safely with team members.

Work Environment:

  • Work on and off trains in varied terrain and weather, day and night.
  • Availability for weekends, nights, and emergencies.
  • Perform heavy labor in all weather conditions.
  • Schedule varies throughout the year based on operations.
  • Typically Monday to Thursday, 10-hour days, with rotating on-call weekends.
