Job summary

Summary

Incumbents are under direct supervision of the Maintenance Director. The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of facilities and maintenance duties in support of the Naval Support Activity Mid-South.

Duties

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES
  • Loads and unloads heavy boxes, bulky supplies, and materials to and from trucks, dollies, etc. Moves heavy boxes or cartons by hand, truck, or dolly. where directed.
  • Opens crates and boxes using crowbars and cuts bands using shears.
  • Stacks boxes and cartons or cartons where directed.
  • Using a shovel, digs ditches where grading and sloping is not required.
  • Fills holes with dirt and levels bumps and low places using shovel, hand tamper, and rake.
  • Runs hand and powered (walking, type) lawnmowers which do not require very heavy physical effort.
  • Clears small tress and brushes using hatchet, handsaw, or clipper.
  • Moves and arranges furniture as directed.
  • May shovel snow, sand, or dirt from sidewalks. Collects and empties garbage cans, burns garbage, and trash.
  • Washes and waxes cars and trucks by hand or using powered buffer.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule and be able to work special Command events when needed.
  • Required to lift or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis.
  • Must be able to perform work outside, often exposed to extreme temperatures, drafts, noise, dust, dirt, and require standing on concrete floors for long periods.

Specialized experience directly related to the duties described above. Qualifying experience must have been equivalent to the next lower level in the normal line of progression.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Knowledge of safe and efficient operating techniques of various large equipment and power tools: (Operates a variety of power equipment to include, but not limited to: posthole diggers, blowers, weed eaters, power washers, mowers, box trucks with lift gate, etc.)
  • Ability to operate and control riding mowers on slopes which requires constant attention to working space and environment.
  • Ability to safely operate equipment around buildings, walls, trees, fence lines, banks and hillsides, trenches, curbs, rocks and other visible obstacles.
  • Ability to operate various controls and levers to maneuver equipment and lift/lower, adjust, engage/disengage components or attached devices.
  • Knowledge and skill using hand tools and other equipment such as: shovels, rakes, hammers, bars, saws, axes, loppers, wrenches, brushes, brooms, ladders, banding equipment, and pallet jacks.
  • Ability to complete assignments involving several tasks by following detailed processes which require remembering directions, sequences, following simple drawings, etc.
  • Ability to follow general instructions or read simple drawings to perform tasks requiring significant manual skill.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
