Job summary

MAX IV Laboratory, located in Lund, Sweden, seeks an experienced Laboratory Technician to join the Support Labs team. The role centers on chemical management, safe handling, and delivery of chemicals and supplies for experiments, working closely with group managers, staff, beamline teams and visiting users.

You will conduct chemical inventories, assist with safety assessments, and help maintain procedures and workflows, while providing hands-on support in a dynamic, multi-user facility.

Qualifications

  • Must have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field (chemistry, chemical engineering, life science or equivalent).
  • Experience in a laboratory environment, preferably at a large-scale research or user facility.
  • Hands-on experience as a laboratory technician across shared/multi-user labs, with at least 1 year of user support.
  • Experience guiding, supervising, and training in bio/chemical lab environments.
  • Proven experience in safe chemical handling, storage, and day-to-day lab practices.
  • Experience organizing chemical storage with proper segregation and storage of different chemicals.
  • Strong ability to follow and enforce SOPs and safety instructions.
  • Experience maintaining chemical inventories (registration, stock control, locations, removal).
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating with a team.
  • Service-oriented mindset with experience supporting scientists/users in a lab setting.
  • Excellent spoken and written English for daily interaction with international users.

  • Conduct annual chemical inventories for support labs and beamlines.
  • Provide practical chemical handling support and lab onboarding for staff and users.
  • Support risk assessments, lab safety, and systematic work environment activities.
  • Support science division management in chemical management and safety responsibilities.
  • Maintain and improve lab procedures, documentation, routines, and workflows.
  • Support beamline operations and mail-in experiments, sample logistics, and 3D printing activities.

Laboratory Technician - Chemical and Beamline Support

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research infrastructure hosted by Lund University.

Your team

The Support Labs team is part of the Beamline Office group and manages MAX IV’s user support laboratories, including the Biology Lab, Chemical Labs, Sample Environment Labs, Detector Support Lab, and specialized workshops. These facilities provide visiting scientists and staff with access to specialized equipment and expert assistance for sample preparation, characterization, and sample handling. As a user facility, MAX IV welcomes a wide range of external researchers. The Support Labs therefore play an essential role in enabling users to carry out their experiments safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established procedures and laboratory standards.

About the role

A key focus of the role is to ensure that chemicals and laboratory supplies required for experiments are available, correctly registered, safely stored, and appropriately prepared and delivered.

You will support the daily operations of the Support Labs and work closely with group managers, laboratory staff, beamline teams, and users on chemical management, laboratory safety, and risk assessments. This is a hands‑on technical role with a strong focus on chemical management, laboratory operations, user support, and training.

We are therefore looking for someone who is flexible, service‑mindful, and comfortable working in a dynamic environment, while maintaining a structured approach and consistently following established laboratory and safety practices.

MAX IV is looking for an experienced Laboratory Technician to join the Support Labs team.

Your main work tasks will be
  • Manage/support ordering, receiving, stocking, and availability of chemicals, PPE, and laboratory consumables.

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field such as chemistry, chemical engineering, life science or equivalent
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment, preferably at a large‑scale research or user facility.
  • Hands‑on experience as a laboratory technician working simultaneously across shared and multi‑user laboratories, with at least one year of experience in user support.
  • Practical experience providing guidance, supervision, and training in bio or chemical laboratory environments.
  • Proven experience in safe chemical handling, storage, and day‑to‑day laboratory practices.
  • Practical experience organising chemical storage, including appropriate segregation and storage of different types of chemicals.
  • Strong ability to follow, apply, and enforce standard operating procedures and safety instructions.
  • Experience in maintaining chemical inventories, including registration, stock control, storage locations, and removal of outdated or unwanted chemicals.
  • Strong ability to work independently in daily operations while coordinating closely with a team.
  • A clear service‑oriented mindset and experience supporting scientists or users in a laboratory setting.
  • Very good spoken and written English, as daily interaction with international users is required.
