Job summary

BCforward seeks a Greenhouse Technician to support research operations at a four-acre facility in Johnston, IA. You will assist with seeding, pollinating, transplanting, watering, harvesting, tissue sampling, and data collection, while maintaining a safe, clean work environment from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED and the ability to follow SOPs, safety and ergonomics protocols with attention to detail.

Qualifications

• Strong communication and organizational skills; able to work independently or in a team.
• Lift at least 30 lbs and work in a warm, humid greenhouse.

Responsibilities

• Care for plants daily: watering, harvesting, seed processing and handling.
• Record-keeping and data collection for corn, soybean, wheat, and others.
• Operate threshing machinery safely following protocols.
• Maintain sanitation, dispose of regulated waste, clean rooms and containers.
• Maintain accurate plant/seed identity across many items.

Job Description

The Controlled Environments Team seeks a motivated and responsible Greenhouse Technician to support research operations at a four-acre facility in Johnston, Iowa. The role will assist with routine greenhouse activities including seeding, pollinating, transplanting, watering, harvesting, tissue sampling, and data collection and handling. The technician will help maintain a professional, clean, and safe work environment while meeting all compliance standards. Work hours are 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

Responsibilities:

• Perform daily greenhouse plant care including watering checks, harvesting, discarding plants, and seed processing and handling for corn, soybean, wheat, and other crops.
• Move plant carts in and out of greenhouses and assist with experiments, data collection, and record maintenance.
• Operate threshing machinery safely as trained and as outlined in protocols. Follow all safety and process protocols at all times.
• Complete routine sanitation tasks including discarding regulated material, destroying waste, cleaning pots and containers, and cleaning and sanitizing rooms.
• Maintain accurate plant and seed identity across thousands of unique identities.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED.
• Ability to follow standard operating procedures and safety and ergonomics protocols with attention to detail.
• Strong communication and organizational skills, self-motivation, positive attitude, and ability to work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision.
• Ability to stand and sit for extended periods and lift a minimum of 30 lbs. Ability to perform repetitive work in a warm, humid greenhouse with pollen present year-round.

Preferred Skills:

• Bachelor's degree in agriculture, horticulture, biology, or related field, or three or more years of related experience, or equivalent education and experience.
• Experience safely operating machinery and following protocols.
• Basic computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, and Outlook, and ability to learn internal research software.
