Job summary

SGS is seeking a Laboratory Minerals Technician to perform testing and sample preparation to determine chemical and physical characteristics for quality control and product development. You will log samples, prepare subsamples, weigh and digest materials, and maintain accurate reports in a safety-focused environment.

The role requires 3+ years in an industrial laboratory or field services setting, a HS diploma (with water lab options) and willingness to obtain MSHA and a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• 3+ years in Industrial Laboratory or Field Services setting required.
• Water Laboratory experience or related science degree preferred where state law requires it.
• Associate degree in science preferred.
• 5+ years in industrial/lab/field settings with safety experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs laboratory testing following SOPs and methods.
• Prepares subsamples using defined methods (Dry, Crush, Pulverize, etc.).
• Weighs and tests samples on relevant equipment.
• Maintains laboratory reports and logs client samples.
• Ensures PPE and safety procedures are followed.
• Keeps lab equipment clean and properly organized.
• Performs QA/QC checks on equipment as needed.

Job Description

The Technician, Laboratory Minerals under general supervision performs laboratory tests to determine chemical and physical characteristics or composition of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials for such purposes as quality control, process control, or product development by performing the following duties.

• Performs laboratory testing, following relevant company’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and methods.
• Prepares a representative subsample from client sample that meets specific requirements using defined methods (Dry, Crush, Pulverize, Pressure Filter, Mix, Riffle Split, etc.).
• Weighs and tests samples on relevant equipment.
• Weighs and digest samples for analysis using relevant equipment.
• Accurately completes and maintains all laboratory reports.
• Receives, sorts and logs client samples into the data base, and prepares samples’ labels.
• Archives, returns, or disposes of client samples as per established procedure.
• Performs daily, weekly, and monthly Quality Assurance/Quality Control checks on equipment.
• Demonstrates good and safe work habits and enforces a clean working environment.
• Performs general upkeep and housekeeping of the laboratory.
• Ensures all equipment and containers are organized and cleaned before and after use
• Ensures all personal protective equipment (PPE) relevant for tasks is worn at all times.
• Ensures compliance with all required local and federal safety processes and procedures.
• May also have preparation or field responsibilities, as required by business needs.
• May assist Junior Technicians as required.
• Adheres to internal standards, policies and procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• High School diploma or equivalent Required
• 3+ years working in Industrial Laboratory or Field Services setting Required
• Water Laboratory only: Where required by the state law, Post-secondary (Associate or Bachelor’s) degree in science, or minimum 1-year supervised water testing experience Required
• Associate degree in or including some Science Preferred
• 5+ years working in industrial/lab/field setting with experience following strict safety standards Preferred

LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS

• A valid and current Driver’s license may be required if the role requires driving a company vehicle. Required
• May be required to obtain 24-hour surface Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) certificate, training is available through SGS. Required

EQUIPMENT

• This job operates in a laboratory environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, printers, and phones.
• This role routinely uses sample prep equipment that may include Jaw Crusher, Bowl & Disc Pulverizing Mills, Pressure Filters, Riffle Splitters, Compressed Air.
• This role routinely uses laboratory equipment/instruments that may include Bottle-top Dispensers, Eppendorf Pipettes, Balances, Muffle Furnace, Sulfur Analyzer, Compressed gases, and ICP-OES as needed.

WORK SCHEDULE

• Position requires occasional overtime.

Compensation

The expected hourly range is $20 - $22. This range represents the minimum and maximum base salary we reasonably expect to pay for this role. Actual compensation within the range will depend on skills, experience, and qualifications.
