Job summary

BronxCare Health System in New York is seeking a laboratory support technician under direct supervision to perform routine duties such as collecting and cleaning glassware and basic housekeeping tasks. You will support phlebotomy and lab operations with accurate data entry and timely specimen handling.

Responsibilities include entering requisition data, preparing specimens, logging panic values, answering phones, routing calls, and transporting specimens.

Qualifications

• One year clinic experience.
• One year sterilization experience.

Responsibilities

• Prepare specimens for lab analysis by centrifugation, pouring off aliquots, rack assembling and delivery to labs.
• Call/log Panic Values and communicate results to clinicians.
• Answer phones and route technical and other calls to appropriate lab personnel.
• Perform tasks for specimens for Reference Lab work, including packing and handling.
• Transport specimens to Laboratory Central Processing and deliver results to patient care areas.
• Participate in CQI activities, data collection and reporting, and adherence to safety policies.
• Maintain a manual back-up system (log/ accession books) in case of computer downtime.

Overview

Under direct supervision, performs routine laboratory duties such as collecting and cleaning glassware and other laboratory apparatus, housekeeping and messenger duties.

Responsibilities

• Enter data from Lab Requisitions: generation of “draw lists” for Phlebotomy services; entering specimens into LIS computer, and provide results to clinician’s inquiries.
• Prepare specimens for lab analysis by: centrifugation, “pouring off” of aliquots, specimen “rack assembling,” delivery of specimens to the lab(s) for analysis.
• Calling/logging “Panic Values.”
• Answer phones; route calls – technical and others to appropriate lab. Personnel; provide patient’s lab. Results in response to clinician’s inquiries.
• Perform all tasks necessary for specimens for “Reference Lab., e.g., filling out forms, physical preparation of specimens; packing/handling specimens.
• Transport specimens to Laboratory Central Processing area.Deliver completed laboratory results to the patient care areas.
• Contribute and participate in the Performance/Quality Improvement activities of the assigned department. Contributes/participation includes: data collection, analysis, implementation of compliance with corrective/improvement activities, membership on CQI teams; Safety & Security Policies; Risk Management: Incident and Occurrence Reporting, Infection Control Policies and Procedures; Patient/Customer Service.
• Maintain a manual back-up system, e.g., log and accession books, to be implemented in the event of “Computer Down-Time.”
• Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisory personnel.
• Monitor pneumatic tubes for specimen arrival. Enter specimen into the LIS system, i.e., test requests, ordering physician, patient demographics.

Phlebotomy (if applicable)
