Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day histology operations, ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Supervise staff, conduct evaluations and development.
  • Monitor workflow, troubleshoot quality issues, and optimize processes.
  • Ensure quality tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and H&E/IHC staining.
  • Oversee IHC workflows, antibody validation, protocol standardization, QC.
  • Maintain and update SOPs including IHC protocols.
  • Train staff in histology and IHC techniques and instrumentation.
  • Manage inventory of IHC reagents, antibodies, and controls.
  • Participate in hiring and onboarding; support R&D and assay validation.
  • Provide bench support as needed.

Laboratory Supervisor – Histology & Molecular

Location: Germantown, MD

Schedule: Monday–Friday (Day Shift)

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced, highly motivated, and detail-oriented Laboratory Supervisor to oversee the daily operations of our histopathology and Molecular laboratory. This role is ideal for a certified histotechnologist with strong technical expertise and leadership experience in both routine histology and molecular services, especially Immunohistochemistry (IHC).

The successful candidate will ensure high-quality slide preparation, maintain compliance with regulatory standards, and support a collaborative laboratory environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the histology laboratory, ensuring efficiency and compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Supervise histotechnologists, laboratory assistants, and support staff, including performance evaluations and staff development.
  • Monitor laboratory workflow, troubleshoot technical and quality issues, and elevate as needed.
  • Ensure high-quality tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining (H&E and IHC) to support accurate pathological evaluation.
  • Oversee and optimize IHC workflows, including antibody validation, protocol standardization, troubleshooting staining issues, and quality control.
  • Maintain, review, and update laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs), including IHC protocols, to ensure adherence to best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Train staff on histology and IHC techniques, instrumentation, and workflow optimization.
  • Manage inventory, including IHC reagents, antibodies, and controls, ensuring proper storage, tracking, and cost control.
  • Participate in hiring processes, including interviewing and onboarding new staff.
  • Support special projects and research & development (R&D) initiatives, including assay development and validation.
  • Provide bench support when needed (e.g., microtomy, staining).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience
  • Proven supervisory experience in a research or clinical laboratory setting with a strong understanding of laboratory management principles.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in histology techniques, including tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Immunohistochemistry (IHC), including assay setup, optimization, and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with automated IHC platforms (e.g., Leica, Ventana, Dako/Agilent)
  • Strong understanding of laboratory management principles and workflow optimization.
  • Familiarity with GLP standards and FDA regulations related to clinical laboratories and drug development.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) for data tracking and reporting.
QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • AS degree in Biological/Physical sciences or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • HT (ASCP)
  • 5 years Histology experience.
  • Hands-on experience with Immunohistochemistry (IHC).
  • Current state licensure, if applicable
  • Meet all of the qualifications listed in the Policy for Minimum Qualification for Histotechnician and Histology Supervisor.
Preferred Work Experience:
  • BS degree in biological/physical sciences
  • HTL (ASCP)
  • Graduate of a NAACLS-accredited Histotechnology program
  • 5 years of histopathology experience, with 1-2 years in a leadership role
Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects: Objects 1 to 10 pounds are lifted and carried frequently; objects 11 to 25 pounds are lifted and carried occasionally; objects 36 to 50 pounds are seldom lifted or carried and objects over 50 pounds are not to be lifted or carried without assistance.
  • Ability to stand and work at the bench for long periods of time.
  • Frequent walking and/or standing.
  • May be required to use a wide variety of manual tools and laboratory instruments and apparatuses all of which demand significant manual dexterity
