Job summary

Mee Memorial Hospital is seeking a Phlebotomy Technician to perform venipuncture, collect and process specimens, and ensure accurate labeling and documentation. The role requires CA Phlebotomy Technician certification, BLS, and at least a year of clinical lab experience.

Responsibilities

  • Chart reports for inpatients and deliver outpatient reports to physicians.
  • Assist others in completing work assignments.
  • Follow designated infection control procedures.
  • Perform miscellaneous clerical duties.

JOB SUMMARY: Performs a variety of routine tasks in the laboratory including blood collection by venipuncture and capillary puncture; facilitates and documents the flow of patient specimens in and out of the laboratory; completes patient clerical information. Performs a variety of clerical duties and other duties as assigned. Must meet the regulatory requirements of CA Codes (Business and Professions Code: 1246); (California Code of Regulations: 1034) or state regulatory certification requirements to work in the clinical laboratory.

Responsibilities
  1. Obtain venous blood samples as required.
    • Check patient identification before drawing sample and compare with laboratory slip to ensure accuracy.
    • Follow established policy when drawing blood and labeling specimens.
    • Possess adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory.
  2. Prepare blood samples for analysis in the laboratory and send outs to reference lab.
    • Alert technologist Clinical Laboratory Scientist when test abnormalities or irregularities are encountered in test orders.
    • Verify that sample is labeled properly per Lab policy manual.
  3. Accommodate STAT orders and other orders as requested.
    • Respond promptly to orders as they are requested.
  4. Log specimens into the Laboratory Information System and prepare report forms and process charges.
    • Charge slips are legible, completed on time and are accurate.
    • Give accurate attention to required data and reports.
    • Bookkeeping is kept current and submitted on time.
  5. Maintain venipuncture supplies requisitions, replacements; perform inventory and supply stocking.
    • Maintain adequate supply levels without hoarding.
    • Inventories are accurate; orders placed on time and stocked accurately.
    • Notify supervisor when unusual increases in stock demands occur, or supplies are back ordered.
    • Keep storage areas, trays, centrifuges, and collection areas clean.
  6. Chart reports on inpatients and deliver or mail outpatient reports to referring physicians.
    • Ensure accuracy and completeness of patient information.
    • Prepare reports in accurate manner and in accordance with established procedures.
  7. Assist others in the completion of work assignments.
    • Willingly help others in the laboratory in completing assignments or perform other tasks as assigned.
    • Respond positively to changes in the work schedule; continually uses time to department advantage.
  8. Follow designated infection control procedures.
    • Wash hands before and after each patient contact and between tests.
  9. Perform miscellaneous clerical duties.
    • Log information accurately and file reports without misfiling.
Qualifications

Licensing Requirements:

  • Current and Active California Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1 – required
  • High School Diploma, or equivalent, required.
  • Current BLS certificate upon hire and maintain current.
  • Minimum 1 year of clinical laboratory experience preferred

Skill Requirements:

  • Must meet the venipuncture requirements of the California Business and Professions Code and the California Administrative Code.

Language Requirements:

  • Ability to understand English.
  • Spanish language skills are helpful.

Physical Demands:

  • Stands, walks, sits, bends, reaches overhead, crouches, kneels, pushes, pulls, and uses both hands when performing assigned duties.
  • Must be able to sit and stand for 6 hours or more per day.
  • Must be able to use hands repetitively for 4 hours or more.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.

Special Demands:

  • Will be willing to perform repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to work with others and perform a variety of assigned duties.
  • Must be able to tolerate blood, tissues and any specimen generated by a hospital.
