Laboratory Manager – Lenexa, KS

Location & Hours

Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (working hours may vary based on project work and client needs).

Pay

Pay range: $88,540+ per year. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and certifications. Successful candidates may be eligible for an annual performance bonus.

Overview

The lab manager will have overall responsibility for the planning and supervision of all technical and operational activities in the Chemistry and Hematology departments. Responsible for operating the lab with the highest standards of quality, safety, and integrity, ensuring efficiency and cost‑effectiveness.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, assign and direct work in the laboratory. Serve as liaison with other areas as needed.
  • Mentor and support direct reports in their responsibilities and functions. Identify and implement training programs as necessary to ensure they receive training in supervisory skill development.
  • Supervise activities of the department’s Quality Assurance Representatives. Ensure quality assurance and compliance procedures are followed.
  • Ensure all assigned technical quality duties (QA/QI indicators, SEICARS, SOPs, etc.) are completed in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate preparedness, participation, and follow‑up actions for inspections in collaboration with the Quality Assurance Department.
  • Oversee staffing of personnel in the hematology and chemistry laboratory departments.
  • Effectively maintain quality staffing by interviewing, hiring, training and providing staff development through performance evaluation and corrective counseling.
  • Identify future needs in terms of staff, equipment, and facilities. Submit appropriate documentation for procurement of such.
  • Review test performance, drive process improvements and project management. Prepare and submit required reports to meet established deadlines.
  • Ensure departmental standard operating procedures accurately reflect the current processes.
  • Coordinate R&D activities as they relate to operations and actively participate on subspecialty committees, corporate committees and business unit committees as needed.
  • Develop annual budget and manage department costs and resources to adhere to budget.
  • Resolve problems through interaction with clients.
  • Define, coordinate and monitor EHS programs and supervise activities of the Department Safety Coordinator. Ensure EHS regulatory standards and safety procedures are followed. Oversee plans and preparations for inspections.
  • Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional and sanitary condition.
  • Adhere to all established CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA and laboratory safety requirements.
  • Required to use personal protective equipment, engineering controls and/or work practice controls as directed by management.
  • Participate in internal and external laboratory inspections.

Qualifications
Required Work Experience
  • A minimum of six (6) years of technical laboratory experience in a clinical setting, including expertise in Chemistry and Hematology. (Required)
  • A minimum of four (4) years of recent direct supervisory experience in a certified CLIA High Complexity clinical laboratory. (Required)
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science from an accredited institution. (Required)
  • Master’s Degree in a related field. (Preferred)
Licenses & Certifications
  • ASCP or equivalent certification. (Preferred)
Skills
  • Proven problem‑solving skills.
  • Must be detail‑oriented, have the ability to work independently, establish work priorities and to handle several tasks simultaneously for maximum department efficiency.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to deal courteously and effectively with employees, co‑workers and clients.
  • Ability to deal with client information in a confidential manner.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook). Ability to work within Laboratory Information Systems.
Physical And Mental Requirements
  • The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects: Objects 1 to 10 pounds are lifted and carried frequently; objects 11 to 25 pounds are lifted and carried occasionally; objects 36 to 50 pounds are seldom lifted or carried and objects over 50 pounds are not to be lifted or carried without assistance.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • May be required to use a wide variety of manual and automated pipettes and laboratory instruments and apparatuses all of which demand significant manual dexterity.
