Job summary

Bryan Health seeks a Laboratory Services Director to oversee accuracy and accountability for the laboratory, hire and train staff, and guide policy to ensure the highest quality of specimens and test results.

Qualifications

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Oversees the accuracy of the laboratory staff to ensure accountability for quality of specimens handled and test results reported. Hires, trains and is responsible for the scheduling of the laboratory staff. Directs, establishes and plans the overall policies and goals for laboratory services. Ensures compliance with all regulatory and safety requirements for the highest quality of service to patients and physicians at all times. Researches, evaluates, recommends and implements technical supplies, instrumentation, equipment and methodologies.

• *Oversees the departmental budgetary procedure to ensure proper operational and capital planning, appropriate and efficient use of resources, and consistent compliance to budgetary and fiscal controls.

• *Responsible for hiring, training, supervising, coaching, mentoring, retaining and evaluating of staff.

• *Keeps informed of current issues including new procedures, developments, and innovation.

• Uses quality improvement processes, programs or outcomes to help improve department operations.

• Establishes and maintains data collection, monitoring and analysis of laboratory services; incorporates results of quality assessments to improve patient care and services.

• Facilitates compliance with all safety and other regulatory agency requirements; maintains knowledge of regulations and acts as a resource for technical and administrative staff, and physicians.

• *Responsible for the development and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures.

• Assists in the monitoring and implementation of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) related to the laboratory.

• *Works with other clinical departments, Information Technology and physicians in the resolution of technical issues.

• Researches, evaluates, recommends and implements the inventory of laboratory equipment instruments and supplies including the management of preventative maintenance and repairs.

• *Collaborates with other staff and departments utilizing effective communication skills and problem-solving techniques; applies continu0us quality improvement concepts and methods to effect appropriate change to meet quality improvement and productivity benchmarks.

• *Collaborates with laboratory leadership to ensure the performance of high complexity testing in all sections is in accordance with policies, procedures, regulatory and safety requirements.

• *Ensures technical staff compliance with all hospital, state, and federal regulations, including but not limited to: Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), and Association for the advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB).

• Researches, evaluates, recommends and implements the inventory of laboratory equipment, instruments, and supplies including the management of preventative maintenance and repairs.

• *Conducts timely staff performance appraisals ensuring staff competence while emphasizing staff retention strategies through coaching and individual development.

• *Maintains productivity benchmarks and looks for continuous improvement in operations and utilization of resources.

• Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

• *Participates in and/or leads meetings, committees, strategic planning and lean projects as assigned.

• Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor of science degree in medical technology (MT), medical laboratory science (MLS) which includes clinical rotation as part of the program or bachelors of science in a related field and one (1) additional year of MT/MLS clinical rotation required. American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) certification or equivalency required.

Minimum of three (3) years' work experience providing all aspects of the clinical laboratory functions required. Minimum of one (1) year supervisory or managerial experience in a clinical setting preferred.

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required within three (3) months of hire. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network.
