Job summary

UL Solutions in Northbrook, IL is seeking an analytical lab technician to support defined test plans, evaluate performance, and document results in formal test reports.

You will lead simple test programs, operate and maintain instruments, and train lab staff on procedures while collaborating with engineering and customer teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related discipline.
  • 1-2 years of analytical lab experience preferred.
  • Experience in IR, TGA, and DSC testing preferred.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to incorporate automation into day-to-day testing.
  • Effective communication with customers.
  • Desire to work in a team-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

  • Follow defined test plans and datasheets with supervision.
  • Evaluate test performance and sample operation to assess results.
  • Record and explain test results and complete test reports.
  • Lead simple test programs as assigned with support.
  • Communicate project status and results as needed.
  • Define test plan, report, deadlines, and manage project activities.
  • Operate and maintain test instruments.
  • Train lab staff on procedures.
  • Integrate basic process improvements into testing.
  • Suggest new instruments, processes, and forms to improve accuracy.
  • Follow safe chemical hygiene practices.
  • Read and follow the UL Code of Conduct and security practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job description

  • Follows defined test plans and datasheets with necessary supervision/support.

  • Evaluates test performance and sample operation to properly evaluate test results.

  • Records and explains test results and completes test report.

  • Serves as Lead for simple test programs as assigned with the necessary assistance.

  • Communicates project status and results as needed.

  • Holds responsibility for defining test plan, report completion and accuracy, meeting of agreed deadlines, and managing project related activities.

  • Examines customer samples and learns to operate appropriate tests for each case with support.

  • Communicates with internal customers during setup and operation to ensure proper evaluation.

  • Directs, builds and/or adapts simple test setups, sample preparations/solutions and instruments to new situations, based on test plans and instructions.

  • Trains other lab staff on these test procedures or instruments.

  • Operates and maintains test instruments appropriately to measure and test samples.

  • Performs maintenance on designated test instruments and laboratory area.

  • For a single testing technology, integrates basic process and instruments improvements into all aspects of the job.

  • Communicates with management and technical staff to provide suggestions for new instruments, processes, and forms to improve accuracy and efficiencies.

  • Understands and follows safe chemical hygiene practices.

  • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct, and follow all physical and digital security practices.

  • Other duties as assigned

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma from an accredited university through a formal program of study in Chemistry or related discipline including Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Organic/Inorganic Chemistry, Material Science but not limited to these disciplines only, or equivalent laboratory experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining high quality and exceptional customer service.

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully partner with Engineering and other Laboratory Personnel to complete projects in a timely manner with high quality.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze special testing needs.

  • Effective communication skills and ability to interact with customers

  • Demonstrated ability to be innovative and creative

  • Desire to work in a team-oriented environment

  • Ability to use Microsoft Office suite is a must

Total Rewards: We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career . The estimated salary range for this position is $52,900 to $70,500 and is based on multiple factors, including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, as well as other factors. This position is eligible for annual bonus compensation with a target payout of 5% of the base salary. This position also provides health benefits such as medical, dental and vision; wellness benefits such as mental and financial health; and retirement savings (401K) commensurate with the standard rewards offered in each individual location or country. We also provide full-time employees with paid time off including vacation (15 days), holiday including floating holidays (12 days) and sick time off (72 hours)
