Job summary

UL Solutions, a global safety science leader, seeks a hands-on chemist to perform EPA-based analyses and GC-MS troubleshooting in a high-volume lab. You will manage TIC review, data handling in Omega LIMS, and lead simple test programs with guidance.

Expect close collaboration with engineering and customers, plus ongoing process improvements. You will ensure test accuracy, timely reporting, and adherence to safety and data security practices while supporting a culture of quality and teamwork

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma from an accredited university through a formal program of study in Chemistry or related discipline including Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Organic/Inorganic Chemistry, Material Science.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining high quality and exceptional customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully partner with Engineering and other Laboratory Personnel to complete projects in a timely manner with high quality.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze special testing needs.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to interact with customers.
  • Demonstrated ability to be innovative and creative.
  • Desire to work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office suite is a must.
  • Ability to incorporate automation into day-to-day testing.

Responsibilities

  • Perform analytical testing using EPA methods (EPA 524, EPA 625) and extraction techniques for BNA samples.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and diagnose GC-MS instrumentation.
  • Process, review, and evaluate TICs.
  • Work with Omega LIMS for data entry, management, and uploads.
  • Handle high-volume production testing, preparing and processing 2–3 sample batches per day.
  • Follow defined test plans and datasheets with supervision.
  • Record, explain, and report test results with accuracy.
  • Lead simple test programs when assigned, with support.
  • Communicate project status and results to stakeholders.
  • Define test plans, ensure report accuracy, meet deadlines, and manage related activities.
  • Examine customer samples and operate appropriate tests with guidance.
  • Coordinate with internal customers during setup and operation for proper evaluation.
  • Adapt test setups and instruments to new situations based on plans.
  • Train other lab staff on procedures or instruments.
  • Maintain and calibrate test instruments and lab area.
  • Suggest instrument, process, or form improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
  • Adhere to safe chemical hygiene practices and security protocols.

Job description

  • Hands-on experience performing analytical testing using EPA methods, including EPA 524 and EPA 625, as well as extraction techniques for BNA (Base Neutral Acid) samples.
  • Demonstrated experience operating, troubleshooting, and diagnosing issues with GC-MS instrumentation.
  • Experience processing, reviewing, and evaluating Tentatively Identified Compounds (TICs).
  • Working knowledge of Omega LIMS, including data entry, management, and data upload processes.
  • Experience working in a high-volume production testing laboratory environment, with the ability to prepare and process 2-3 sample batches per day.
  • Follows defined test plans and datasheets with necessary supervision/support.
  • Evaluates test performance andsample operation to properly evaluate test results.
  • Records and explains test results and completes test report.
  • Serves as Lead for simple test programs as assigned with the necessary assistance.
  • Communicates project statusand results as needed.
  • Holds responsibility for defining test plan, report completion and accuracy, meeting of agreeddeadlines, and managing project related activities.
  • Examines customer samples and learns to operate appropriate tests for each case with support.
  • Communicates withinternal customers during setup and operation to ensure proper evaluation.
  • Directs, builds and/or adapts simple test setups, sample preparations/solutions and instruments to new situations,based on test plans and instructions.
  • Trains other lab staff on these test procedures or instruments.
  • Operates and maintains test instruments appropriately to measure and test samples.
  • Performs maintenance ondesignated test instruments and laboratory area.
  • For a single testing technology, integrates basic process and instruments improvements into all aspects of the job.
  • Communicates with management and technical staff to provide suggestions for new instruments, processes, andforms to improve accuracy and efficiencies.
  • Understands and follows safe chemical hygiene practices.
  • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct, and follow all physical and digital security practices.
  • Other duties as assigned

Total Rewards: We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career. The estimatedsalary range for this position is $64,800- $86,400 and is based on multiple factors, including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, as well as other factors.This position is eligible for annual bonus compensation with a target payout of 5% of the base salary. This position also provides health benefits such as medical, dental and vision; wellness benefits such as mental and financial health; and retirement savings (401K) commensurate with the standard rewards offered in each individual location or country. We also provide full-time employees with paid time off including vacation (15 days), holiday and personal days (totaling 12 days), and sick time off (72 hours).
