Job summary

Kaiser Permanente is seeking a phlebotomist to perform venipuncture, skin puncture, and pre-analytical steps in a laboratory setting. The role includes labeling samples and preparing specimens for analysis.

Applicants should have one year of phlebotomy experience, a high school diploma or GED, and California Phlebotomy Technician certification (I or II). This is an on-call position with potential evening shifts.

Qualifications

• One (1) year phlebotomy experience in an acute care medical center or non-acute care setting or equivalent military experience.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Phlebotomy Technician II Certificate (California) OR Phlebotomy Technician I Certificate (California).
• Demonstrated ability to perform the duties/responsibilities of the job at a fully satisfactory performance level.

Responsibilities

• Upholds Kaiser Permanente's Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable laws.
• Selects the appropriate phlebotomy technique relative to the age and physical maturation of the patient.
• Assesses the quality of blood to be drawn from the patient based on age, maturation and test.
• Performs venipuncture, finger stick or heel stick, as required, on patients of all ages.
• Properly labels samples and transports to laboratory or CLS as required.
• Performs the pre-analytical phase of testing by bar coding, centrifuging, separating, logging, culturing and staining of specimens.
• Monitors and maintains inventory levels of supplies and reagents.
• Establishes and maintains courteous, cooperative relations with the public, patients and staff.
• Performs other duties including checking in patients, collecting revenue, accessioning test orders and giving patient preparation instructions.
• Handles difficult patients professionally and remains adaptable to on-call evening shifts.
• Demonstrates professionalism in attitude and appearance and follows directions from supervisors and seniors.
• Assumes other activities and responsibilities as directed.

Essential Responsibilities

• Selects the appropriate phlebotomy technique relative to the age and physical maturation of the patient.
• Assesses the quality of blood to be drawn from the patient based on the patients age, physical maturation and the test or study to be performed.
• Performs venipuncture, finger stick or heel stick, as required, proficiently on patients of all ages.
• Properly labels sample(s) and transports to laboratory or Clinical Laboratory Scientist as required.
• Performs the pre-analytical phase of testing by bar coding, centrifuging, separating, logging, culturing and staining of bacteriological specimens.
• Monitors and maintains appropriate inventory levels of supplies and reagents.
• Establishes and maintains courteous, cooperative relations with the public, patients and other personnel.
• Performs other duties as required including checking in patients collecting appropriate revenue, accessioning test orders and giving preparation instructions to patients.
• Handles difficult patients in a professional manner.
• Displays professionalism at all times, both in attitude and appearance.
• Follows directives form all supervisors, leads and seniors.
• Assume other activities and responsibilities from time to time as directed.

Basic Qualifications

Experience

• One (1) year phlebotomy experience in an acute care medical center or non-acute care setting or equivalent military experience.

Education

• High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

License, Certification, Registration

• Phlebotomy Technician II Certificate (California) OR Phlebotomy Technician I Certificate (California)

• NOTE: The SCPMG Regional Reference Lab does not require phlebotomy certification.

Preferred Qualifications

• Relevant college courses in the life sciences.

Notes

• May require to cover other locations; MH, NoHo, MOB3, Hospital, MOB5, SCMOB1, SCMOB2 & CC. Primary shift (evening).
• This is an on call position, days and hours may vary.
• Available for 2 holidays/year.
