Job summary

Memorial Healthcare System is seeking a Lab Assistant in Pembroke Pines, FL to prepare specimens for analysis and register orders in hospital information systems. You will verify specimen acceptability, perform pre-analytical and analytical procedures, and support technologists in a busy clinical laboratory.

The role requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and at least 6 months of lab assistant experience; phlebotomy certification is preferred.

  • Six (6) months of prior experience as a lab assistant.
  • Certification in Phlebotomy is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supports technologists by loading instruments, preparing reagents, thawing, pooling, importing, and issuing of blood products.
  • Keeps appropriate persons informed of instrument problems and resolutions.
  • Assists in the preparation and processing of bone marrow specimens.
  • Assists with receiving, identifying, accessioning, processing and transporting specimens.
  • Performs clerical duties.
  • Maintains equipment and adequate stock of supplies.
  • Maintains work area in a safe, aseptic and organized manner.
  • Provides laboratory customer service including add-ons, specimen collection information, phlebotomy requests, result inquiry, etc.
  • Performs the phlebotomy function to ensure accurate and timely processing of lab test orders.
  • Completes culture setup of microbiology samples and gram stain preparation when staffed in Microbiology department.
  • Operates, maintains, and repairs clinical laboratory equipment within training scope.

Summary

Prepares specimens for analysis by registering and accessioning orders via Hospital Information System and Laboratory Information Systems (clinical lab and/or anatomic pathology), verifying specimen acceptability. Performs established pre-analytical and analytical laboratory procedures, not requiring Medical Technologist or Histology Technologist interpretation, in accordance with established laboratory policy in an accurate, safe, and timely manner.

* 5 days a week. - Weekends required. - Experience in working in a hospital or reference laboratory, highly preferred.
