Job summary

Kaiser Permanente in California is seeking a dedicated phlebotomy technician in Bakersfield to perform venipuncture, finger sticks and the pre-analytic steps of laboratory testing with accuracy and empathy. In a fast-paced clinical setting you will label specimens, transport to the lab, monitor supplies and maintain courteous relations with patients and staff, while following all policies and procedures.

A minimum of 1 year phlebotomy experience, a High School diploma or GED, and California

Qualifications

• 1 year phlebotomy experience in an acute care medical center or clinic.

Responsibilities

• Upholds Kaiser Permanente policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
• Selects appropriate phlebotomy technique by patient age.
• Assesses blood draw quantity based on age and tests.
• Performs venipuncture, finger stick or heel stick on patients of all ages.
• Labels samples correctly and transports to the lab.
• Performs pre-analytical steps including bar coding, centrifuging, logging.
• Maintains inventory of supplies and reagents.
• Maintains courteous relations with patients and staff.
• Performs other duties as required and follows supervisor directions.
• Handles difficult patients professionally.

Job description

Job Summary

To perform venipuncture and skin puncture and pre-analytical and post analytical steps of laboratory testing.

Essential Responsibilities

• Upholds Kaiser Permanentes Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local laws.
• Selects the appropriate phlebotomy technique relative to the age and physical maturation of the patient.
• Assesses the quantity of blood to be drawn from the patient based on the patients age, physical maturation and the test or study to be preformed.
• Performs venipuncture, finger stick or heel stick, as required, proficiently on patients of all ages.
• Properly labels sample(s) and transports to laboratory or Clinical Laboratory Scientist as required.
• Performs the pre-analytical phase of testing by bar coding, centrifuging, separating, logging, culturing and staining of bacteriological specimens.
• Monitors and maintains appropriate inventory levels of supplies and reagents.
• Establishes and maintains courteous, cooperative relations with the public, patients and other personnel.
• Performs other duties as required including checking in patients, collecting appropriate revenue, accessioning test orders and giving preparation instructions to patients.
• Handles difficult patients in a professional manner.
• Displays professionalism at all times, both in attitude and appearance.
• Follows directives from all supervisors, leads and seniors.
• Assume other activities and responsibilities from time to time as directed.

Basic Qualifications

• One (1) year phlebotomy experience in an acute care medical center or non-acute care setting.

Education

• High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED).

License, Certification, Registration

• Phlebotomy Technician I Certificate (California) OR Phlebotomy Technician II Certificate (California)

Additional Requirements

• Demonstrated ability to perform the duties/responsibilities of the job at a fully satisfactory performance level.

• Relevant college courses in the life sciences.
