MedStar Health’s Washington Hospital Center is seeking a Laboratory Technician to collect and process laboratory specimens, and support routine duties in the assigned section. The role includes specimen retrieval, labeling, LIS data entry, and ensuring proper safety and quality standards.

The position requires a high school diploma or GED, with 1–2 years of laboratory experience preferred. Shifts are 3pm–11:30pm, Monday–Friday with rotating weekends and on-call responsibilities.

About the Job

Working hours for this role is 3pm - 11:30pm, Monday - Friday with rotating weekend, holiday's and on call.

General Summary of Position

Collects and processes laboratory specimens. Performs simple, routine duties specific to the assigned section.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Retrieves specimens as directed and transports them to the laboratory for analysis, using appropriate or specified equipment for collecting and handling specimens. Logs specimens into the laboratory. Bags and files specimens and discards surgical specimens as necessary.
  • Reviews specimen identification, investigates discrepancies, generates appropriate reports, and submits corrections.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly work environment in accordance with safety and biohazardous standards. Reports unsafe or hazardous conditions.
  • Maintains required records, reports, statistics, and files as directed.
  • Orders laboratory supplies and maintains supply inventories as directed.
  • Performs and maintains quality control and preventive maintenance of equipment and materials, including the morgue. Conducts instrument and refrigerator maintenance checks. Brings out-of-range results to the attention of regional Anatomic Pathology consolidated laboratory leadership.
  • Performs preliminary setup procedures for specimens. Accessions incoming laboratory specimens; labels and verifies receipt; adds fixatives; and sorts specimens for laboratory sections. Assists pathologists, physicians' assistants, and technicians as required.
  • Assists with and performs patient registration as needed or assigned. Places orders and performs inquiries in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Records and dates supplies as they are received and put into use. Labels supplies appropriately.
  • Screens visitors and telephone calls, takes messages, provides laboratory results and/or information, and refers calls as necessary.
  • Performs send-out testing to reference laboratories and coordinates shared testing with other MedStar hospitals. Monitors the pending log and mails reports as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One year of clinical laboratory experience preferred.
Experience
  • One to two years of laboratory experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
