Job summary

Baylor College of Medicine is seeking an Laboratory Animal Technician I to join the Center for Comparative Medicine in Houston, TX. This onsite position supports care and handling of laboratory animals under general supervision, ensuring safety, sanitation, and compliance with AAALAC standards.

The role requires a High School diploma or GED, one year of relevant experience, and ALAT certification by AALAS. Work is Monday–Friday, 7 a.m.–4 p.m., with a nonexempt status and onsite arrangement.

Responsibilities

• Feeds and waters animals.
• Changes animal caging as scheduled, sanitizing rooms, equipment and hallways.
• Conducts daily animal health checks.
• Receives animals into and transfers animals out of facility, and maintains detailed accurate records.
• Ensures that activities are in compliance with AAALAC standards.
• Applies permanent identification devices, collects tissue biopsies.
• Establishes breeding cages and weans juveniles.
• Receives, processes and fulfills internal purchase order requests.
• Detailed record keeping and log documentation.
• Ability to work independently with limited direct supervision

Summary

The Center for Comparative Medicine provides for the care, health and well-being of all research animals used in the pursuit of scientific achievement and excellence at Baylor College of Medicine. CCM provides the highest quality veterinary and animal care and acts as a resource for the faculty on veterinary and scientific issues relating to the use of laboratory animals. Under general supervision, provides routine care and handling of laboratory animals in a safe and sanitary manner.

Job Duties

Feeds and waters animals.
Changes animal caging as scheduled, sanitizing rooms, equipment and hallways.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED.
• One year of relevant experience.
• Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
