Job description

An incumbent to a position in this class is a working supervisor assigning and directing Laborers and other personnel in maintenance and cleaning tasks. The Labor Supervisor I works hand in hand with his personnel and the nature of the work includes a small degree of technical knowledge. The incumbent has the responsibility for seeing that the work is done in an efficient manner, on schedule and in accordance with approved procedures. Work is reviewed in process and upon completion by a superior.Supervises personnel and participates in the performance of the following tasks:

• -maintenance of storm drains, manholes, catch basins, curbs, gutters, retaining walls, park areas, grounds, buildings, etc;
• -minor repairs to grass cutting instruments and tools, water sprinkling equipment and a variety of other machinery and tools necessary in the work of general grounds maintenance;
• -loading and unloading of materials and supplies;
• -cleaning of streets, receivers, catch basins, removal of ice and snow and other related activities;
• -cleaning of vacant apartments;
• -pick-up of trash cans and the cleaning of trash racks weekly;
• Supervises the firing up of incinerators;
• Instructs and trains subordinates in the use of equipment and various materials;
• Maintains records of work completed and submits reports as requested;
• May drive a truck or operate equipment with a maximum gross weight of l8,000 pounds;

• (A)Continuous and permanent status in any city department in the competitive class as a Cleaner, Cleaning Worker, Custodian, Head Janitor, Janitor, Laborer, Maintenance Assistant (Sewer Cleaning), Sanitation Worker forone year.
• OR(B)Continuous and permanent status in any city department in the non-competitive class as a Laborer I, Laborer II or Housing Custodian fortwoyears.

Special Requirement
