Job summary

Bechtel is seeking a senior Labor Relations leader for the Richland, WA project office to guide daily LR activities on construction projects and to resolve disputes and grievances. The role emphasizes strategic process improvements with unions and construction management while ensuring compliance with policies and labor laws.

The position requires leading LR/IR/WFS teams, coordinating external union meetings, and shaping project plans.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises daily labor relations activities on construction projects and operating facilities and provides advice and guidance to labor relations personnel in the resolution of labor disputes, grievances, and work stoppages to prevent construction schedule delays.
  • Represents Bechtel in external meetings with local union officials and in pre-negotiation meetings for project and national labor agreements, and internally in business development meetings with potential clients.
  • Supervises the preparation of information and data to be discussed at these meetings, including local area surveys on manual workforce availability, productivity and compensation, available local housing, labor trends and practices, and proposed project plan and/or project agreement
  • Supervises the development and implementation of process improvement initiatives with union officials and construction management and reviews policies and practices and recommends changes
  • Monitors existing LR/IR/WFS (Labor Relations, Industrial Relations, Workforce Services) programs, and research and collection of data, to ensure desired objectives, studies and /or results are being achieved
  • Leads complex craft employee relations investigations and resolves employee disputes
  • Supervises LR/IR/WFS teams and change management in LR/IR/WFS, on project, and within Bechtel
  • Manages LR/IR/WFS activities to conform to company and site policies/procedures and legal requirements
  • Responsible for overseeing the recruiting, screening and in processing of the craft employee
  • Provides advice and counsel to management on LR/IR/WFS policies

Project Overview:

Join us as we make history at the Hanford Vit Plant, known as the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant. We are designing and building a one-of-a-kind facility that will turn radioactive and chemical waste left over from World War II and Cold War plutonium production into a form safe for disposal. Your efforts will help protect the nearby Columbia River and the communities, salmon, and wildlife along its shorelines throughout the Northwest.

Sitting at the confluence of the Columbia, Snake and Yakima rivers near two mountain ranges, our community provides access to year-round outdoor recreation, 300 days of sun a year, more than 200 wineries within a 50-mile radius, and the amenities of large cities just a three-hour drive (or short flight) to Seattle and Portland.

Job Summary:

In this role, you will lead a team and manage daily labor relations activities on construction projects, providing advice in the resolution of labor disputes, grievances, and work stoppages. Your strategic input will enable the industrial relations team to develop and implement process improvement initiatives that facilitate positive labor relations and prevent labor problems and schedule delays.

Full-Time In Office: This position is a full-time role located in the Richland, Washington project office. #LI-TH1

Major Responsibilities:

Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 10-13 years of relevant experience or 14-17 years of relevant work experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Must possess the right to work and remain in the United States without Bechtel visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site. (Even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge)
  • Non‑U.S. citizens from countries identified by the Department of Energy as posing heightened security concerns-including sensitive countries, state sponsors of terrorism, countries of risk, and other designated countries-are subject to additional security requirements that limit site access.
  • Significant experience in unionized construction an asset
  • Good working knowledge of North America's Building Trades
  • Good working knowledge of WFD initiatives
  • Good working knowledge of Building Trades Apprenticeship programs and training
