Job description

The University of Virginia, Department of Pathology, School of Medicine, is seeking a Lab Technician. This technician will work in the research group of Dr. Matthew McCord. Dr. McCord's research group currently uses space in Dr. Roger Abounder's laboratory and works closely with Dr. Abounader and his laboratory staff. The focus of Dr. McCord's research group is studying the molecular and genetic basis of innate and acquired therapy resistance in brain tumors, especially glioblastoma, and identifying ways to overcome resistance.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional organizational skills, strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Cell culture

  • CRISPR gene editing

  • siRNA gene suppression

  • Nucleic acid and protein extraction

  • Immunoblots

  • PCR

  • Preparing samples for DNA and RNA sequencing.

  • Flow cytometry.

  • Mouse procedures and care, and data analysis.

Previous experience in these or related areas are welcome, but extensive training will be provided upon hiring.

Minimum requirements:

  • Education: Associate's degree required; may accept equivalent combination of experience, education, certification in lieu of degree.

  • Experience: Two or more years of lab experience which may include student experience.


Physical Demands: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

Hiring Range:$20 - $24/hour, commensurate with education and experience.
