Job summary

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York seeks a dedicated Cage Washer to support daily care of mice, rats, and frogs in an AAALAC-accredited facility, ensuring high animal welfare and smooth operations.

You will perform routine cage cleaning, monitor environmental controls, record data, assist with colony management, and provide basic animal nursing and lab support to scientific staff. Weekend hours may be required.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in a scientific discipline.
  • Six months of relevant work experience preferred but not required.
  • ALAT certification preferred but not required.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain focus on routine tasks.
  • Skilled in operating cage washers, autoclaves, and other disinfecting/sterilizing equipment.
  • Comfortable working with or around laboratory animals.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality control.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate proficiency and be available to perform all duties required for the Cage Washer position.

  • Transfer animals between cages and tanks as needed.
  • Monitor controls regulating temperature and humidity in animal quarters.
  • Record data according to instructions, including genealogy, diet, weight, medications, and food intake.
  • Provide general animal nursing and laboratory assistance to scientific staff and the Animal Facility Manager.
  • Feed, water, and care for research animals according to established schedules.
  • Assist Animal Facility Supervisors with transgenic rodent colony management, including modified barrier housing, colony health management, and maintenance of mouse lines.
  • Provide pre- and post-operative care to animals, maintain health records, and perform minor treatments as necessary.
  • Work occasional weekends and holidays as required.

At Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a world-renowned research institution, we are seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our AAALAC-accredited animal facility.
