Job summary

The company is seeking a highly skilled lab technician to repair, test, and calibrate instruments, relays, meters and related equipment in lab or field settings. Duties include operating oscilloscopes, programming meters, and maintaining safety and records.

Qualifications

  • Education equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by one year of technical training in electricity, electronics and mechanics.
  • Three years' experience in maintenance and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment including one year as a shop mechanic.
  • Working knowledge of DC and AC electricity and electronics as applied to electrical measuring equipment, relays and mechanical devices.
  • Ability to work with small tools on delicate instruments.
  • Must pass CAST aptitude test.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs and tests electrical instruments, relays, instrument transformers, measuring devices and test equipment, including preparing instrument scales or dials.
  • Repairs, tests and adjusts all types of single phase and polyphase electromechanical and electronic watt‑hour meters and standards. Programs and initializes electronic meters and registers using PC and hand held programmers.
  • M akes routine types of tests involving electric and electronic testing devices including oscilloscopes, high voltage and high current sources and surge generator.
  • Assembles and wires test equipment and test circuits from working sketches.
  • Maintains inventory of measurement and test equipment including locations, test periods and histories.
  • Prepares and maintains certifications and records associated with testing and repair operations.
  • Performs work in a safe manner and maintains work area in a clean, orderly condition.
  • Prepares test data in a form so that test reports can be written.
  • Maintains stock of parts necessary for above work and requests purchase of required items.
  • Instructs and directs the work of other lab technicians and lesser grade employees as assigned.

Overall Purpose:

Under semi-direct supervision, performs highly skilled work in connection with the repair, maintenance and testing of instruments, relays, test equipment, watt-hour meters and instrument transformers and makes routine tests in the laboratory or field.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Repairs, tests and adjusts all types of single phase and polyphase electromechanical and electronic watt‑hour meters and standards. Programs and initializes electronic meters and registers using PC and hand held programmers.
  • Makes routine types of tests involving the use of electric and electronic testing devices including cathode ray oscilloscopes, high voltage and high current sources and surge generator.
  • Assembles and wires test equipment and test circuits from working sketches.
  • Maintains inventory of measurement and test equipment including locations, test periods and histories.
  • Prepares and maintains certifications and records associated with testing and repair operations. May use computer terminal or PC for collecting data associated with assigned work as required.
  • Performs work in a safe manner and maintains work area in a clean, orderly condition.
  • Prepares test data in a form so that test reports can be written. May work with engineers in carrying out tests.
  • Maintains stock of parts necessary for above work and requests purchase of required items.
  • Instructs and directs the work of other lab technicians and lesser grade employees as assigned.
  • Performs other work related to the above as required or assigned.
Education / Experience Requirements:
  • Education equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by one year of technical training in the area of electricity, electronics and mechanics.
  • Three years' experience in maintenance and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment including one year as a shop mechanic.
  • Must have a working knowledge of DC and AC electricity and electronics as applied to electrical measuring equipment, relays and mechanical devices.
  • Must demonstrate an ability to work with small tools on delicate instruments.
  • Must pass the company administered standardized aptitude test (CAST).
  • Must hold a valid driver's license.
