Job summary

Mercy is seeking a dedicated Lab Support Technician I (Phlebotomy) for the night shift to join our laboratory team. You will support specimen collection, processing, reporting, data management, and exceptional customer service for patients, providers, and coworkers.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, committed to quality patient care, and able to uphold HIPAA regulations and laboratory policies while providing Mercy Signature Service.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Successful completion of probationary period.
• No active disciplinary actions or performance improvement plans.

Responsibilities

• Perform safe, accurate collection of laboratory specimens.
• Ensure proper specimen identification, labeling, handling, transport, and referral.
• Assist with specimen processing and report management.
• Maintain confidentiality per HIPAA and lab policies.
• Resolve billing issues as assigned.
• Receive and distribute laboratory reports under leadership guidance.
• Demonstrate effective computer skills for electronic communication and data management.
• Organize, prioritize, and complete work within turnaround times.
• Create and utilize work aids as needed.
• Communicate issues to stakeholders for resolution.
• Assist with inventory control and resource stewardship.

Lab Support Technician I (Phlebotomy)

The Lab Support Technician (LST I) is part of the provider care team acting in a support capacity for reports, data and scheduling functions of the laboratory. This position is responsible for providing accurate, timely and effective provision of laboratory support. The LST I will be required to exhibit excellent customer service skills in line with the Mercy Signature Service with all internal and external customer interactions. The LST I is responsible as required for the skillful acquisition of laboratory specimens for testing, utilizing safe, accurate, effective, professional methodologies while observing HIPAA confidentiality requirements and lab policies. The LST I will be responsible for all processing, transport and referral of all types of laboratory specimens and reports as required. In order for the co-worker to achieve the competencies of the LST I position they must be observed by laboratory management or designee and complete all departmental checklists for the LST I position. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Support & Specimen Collection

• Perform safe, accurate, and professional collection of laboratory specimens.
• Ensure proper specimen identification, labeling, handling, transport, and referral for testing.
• Assist with specimen processing and report management within laboratory specialty areas.
• Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements and laboratory policies.
• Resolve billing issues as assigned.
• Receive and distribute laboratory reports under the direction of laboratory leadership.

Operational Excellence

• Demonstrate effective computer skills for electronic communication and data management.
• Organize, prioritize, and complete work within established turnaround times.
• Create and utilize work aids as needed.
• Communicate issues appropriately to stakeholders for resolution.
• Assist with inventory control and resource stewardship.
• Attend department, laboratory, and Mercy system meetings as required.

Customer Service

• Deliver exceptional service consistent with Mercy Signature Service standards.
• Communicate professionally and effectively with patients, providers, coworkers, vendors, and the public.
• Participate in training and education of staff as requested.

• Demonstrate competency in assigned responsibilities according to CMS guidelines.
• Follow all established laboratory policies and procedures.
• Identify and participate in process improvement opportunities.
• Adhere to all safety regulations, including: Chemical Hygiene Plan Exposure Control Plan Bloodborne Pathogen Standards

Qualifications

Required

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Successful completion of probationary period.
• No active disciplinary actions or performance improvement plans.
• Ability to demonstrate competency through departmental training and completion of required checklists.

Preferred

• College coursework in Chemistry, Biology, or other science-related fields.
• Previous clinical laboratory experience.
• Previous phlebotomy experience preferred.

Continuing Education Requirements

• Complete a minimum of six (6) CEUs annually.
• Submit appropriate documentation, such as attendance certificates or sign-in records.
• Complete all mandatory education and training requirements on time.
• Participate in job-related educational opportunities approved by laboratory leadership.
