Job summary

HNL Lab Medicine, part of Lehigh Valley Health Network, Cedar Crest, PA, is seeking an experienced laboratory professional to supervise moderate complexity testing and ensure quality across the department.

The role includes SOP maintenance, staff scheduling, payroll approval, and collaboration with the Education and Safety teams to uphold CLIA standards and safety policies.

Qualifications

  • - Education: High school diploma or GED; 3-4 years in a clinical environment with data processing/specimen handling experience.
  • - AS degree preferred or equivalent education/experience in health/medical fields.
  • - Graduate of health/medical assistant or similar training program with lab technique taught.

Responsibilities

  • Performs moderate complexity testing and enters results into the Laboratory Information System.
  • Assists in development and maintenance of SOPs per CLSI guidelines.
  • Supervises department activities and staffing, directs corrective action and monitors efficiency.
  • Evaluates specimen processing and testing; troubleshoots instrumentation as needed.
  • Prepares qualitative and quantitative reports and records.
  • Performs basic quality control and notifies technologist of discrepancies.
  • Approves payroll submissions, PTO requests, and attendance records.
  • Supports Education Department in training and continuing education programs.
  • Investigates Patient Safety Reports and implements necessary education.
  • Leads regular meetings to improve department communications and planning.
  • Directs proper hazardous materials storage and safety program in coordination with safety officer.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job description

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:00a-3:30p

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities of those supervised, as required, which includes up to and including CLIA classified moderately complex laboratory testing and entering of results into the Laboratory Information System. Provides 24/7 rotating on call coverage.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures according to the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
  • Supervises departmental activities and staffing assignments to maintain a high quality of work. Takes corrective action, when necessary, to redirect activities and to correct problems. Monitors work activities to improve efficiency.
  • Evaluates specimen collection, processing, and testing to ensure quality and integrity. Troubleshoots instrumentation and test methods as necessary. Confers with technical personnel and management when appropriate.
  • Prepares various qualitative and quantitative reports and records.
  • Performs and reviews basic quality control functions pertaining to moderate complexity testing, instrument checks, and notifies a technologist with any discrepancies.
  • Approves payroll submissions, PTO requests, and maintains attendance records.
  • Supports Education Department personnel/trainers and/or designee in the training and orientation of new staff members and continuing education programs.
  • Investigates Patient Safety Reports and follows through on any necessary education.
  • Strives to improve communications within the department by conducting and recording regular meetings.
  • Assists in planning for effective utilization of resources.
  • Directs the proper storage of hazardous materials and the laboratory safety program in conjunction with the safety officer.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A. Education/Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); Three to Four years in a clinical environment with data processing/specimen handling experience. A.S. degree preferred or an equivalent demonstration of education and experience. Graduate of health/medical assistant or similar training program from an accredited institution where general laboratory technique is taught. Must meet CLIA 88 personnel requirements for moderate complexity testing.
  • B. Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • C. Math Ability: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • D. Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • E. Computer Skills: Word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, designated laboratory software.
