Job description

Job Summary

The Lab Supervisor is responsible for microscopic tissue slides for diagnostic purposes, performs tissue stains to assist in diagnosis, handles specimen grossing, and maintains laboratory equipment.

Schedule

Full Time, 30+ hours in our NY Pathology Lab. Availability Monday through Friday within operating hours of 1:00pm - 9:30pm. Flexibility to help cover in a team environment is needed.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and direct other employees in the Laboratory.
  • Facilitate team processes by working in collaboration with team members to ensure that task priorities, goals and achievements are completed and coordination with management.
  • Responsible for all aspects of operation in the histology area including preparation and maintenance of records, reports, analysis of testing methodologies, training, instrumentation, and compliance.
  • Prepare tissue for microscopic examination to establish and confirm patient diagnosis.
  • Perform grossing and fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining.
  • Execute tasks requiring attention to detail, advanced computer skills, mechanical ability and knowledge of biology, immunology, anatomy, and chemistry.
  • Plan day‑to‑day workload by setting work pace, coordinating work assignments, identifying and solving problems, and defining completion times.
  • Distribute and balance workloads and tasks among employees in accordance with established workflow, skill level and occupational specialties, making adjustments to accomplish priority workload in a timely manner.
  • File blocks, slides, and requisitions; accessioning and typing; supply inventory management.
  • Schedule coverage for subsections within the work unit, adjust schedules in lieu of techs on day and annual leave as needed.
  • Supervise and communicate with shifts and handle customer service 24/7 (even if not physically in the laboratory).
  • Travel to other locations/offices for lab related work as required.
  • Create and maintain mandatory policies and procedures and update if needed.
  • Coordinate with the laboratory courier service and resolve any issues or emergencies that arise with specimen pick‑ups.
  • Troubleshoot IT, IT interface and equipment.
  • Coordinate with reference laboratories and troubleshoot issues.
  • Assist office level customer service for pathology related issues.
  • Follow OSHA, HIPAA and CLIA guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned by leadership and business needs.
Specific Duties
  • Accessioning, typing, specimen send outs and TC component send outs.
  • Perform grossing, embedding, microtomy and staining.
  • Accurate and timely preparation and staining of histology specimen.
  • Use standard aseptic procedure and safeguards.
  • Perform IHC and special stains.
  • Control contaminated specimen.
  • Prepare slides.
  • Manage waste.
  • Ensure equipment is operated and maintained according to manufacturer’s guidelines and supplies are adequate.
  • Maintain accurate records for quality control, quality assurance and patient data.
  • Integrate EMR-LIS and resolve troubleshooting.
  • Assist office level customer service for pathology related issues.
Qualifications

  • Knowledge of programming and operation of general laboratory and automated JHC.

Travel

From time to time, operational business needs (e.g. training sessions, emergency coverage issues, etc.) may require employee travel to alternate locations within a reasonable distance based on GM or RM discretion.

Pay Range

Hourly Pay Range: $38.04 - $47.55
