Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Lab Supervisor to oversee daily operations, staff supervision, and quality assurance across campus locations. The role ensures lab results meet CAP procedures and regulatory standards while coordinating cross-campus coverage and ongoing staff development.

You will lead competency assessments, participate in budget considerations, and support the implementation of department goals, with travel between affiliated sites as needed.

Qualifications

• 5 years clinical or anatomic laboratory experience.
• 1 year of leadership experience in a clinical/anatomic setting.
• Knowledge of evaluation methodologies, data analysis, statistics, QC/proficiency testing, and root cause analysis.
• Strong interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft products.

Responsibilities

• Oversee laboratory staff and operations across campus locations.
• Ensure compliance with CAP, Joint Commission, and other regulatory requirements.
• Develop and maintain procedures; participate in equipment validation and maintenance.
• Guide staff training plans, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.
• Support quality assurance activities and interdepartmental communication.

Responsible for day-to-day supervision of staff, laboratory testing and workflow in the laboratory section as assigned. Ensures laboratory results are produced in accordance with established laboratory procedures. Coordinates communication of technical and result issues to lab management and operations leadership. Provides advanced technical support for staff and is an active participant in quality assurance management in the laboratory.

Major Responsibilities:

• Oversight of laboratory staff: makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions. Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.
• Completes documentation of competency: signs off on new employee’s probationary period and annual staff competencies, as required by CAP.
• Coordinates scheduling, staffing, and emergent coverage needs for all campus laboratory locations.
• Is an active participant in the management team facilitating the implementation and communication of the departmental goals.
• Make recommendations for capital purchases, staff and /or process changes to be included in the budget consideration process. Ensures day‑to‑day decisions are consistent with the laboratory’s financial goals and objectives.
• Writes, edits, and organizes new and existing procedures. Takes an active role in the procedure review process to ensure they remain consistent with laboratory practices.
• Ensures compliance with all laboratory quality and safety policies.
• Ensures all periodic instrument maintenance is performed. Serves as a laboratory resource for advanced instrument repair/troubleshooting.
• Provides guidance and appropriate follow‑through to other staff members for complex or unusual test results.
• Facilitates completion of validation studies for new equipment/assays. Develop staff training plans for new equipment and assays.
• Ensures all proficiency testing is performed according to established laboratory and CAP procedures. Reviews all CAP proficiency results and leads investigations into CAP PT exceptions.

Standard Supervisor Level Responsibilities:

• Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies such as Joint Commission, DPH, etc. Develops and maintains procedures necessary to meet regulatory requirements.
• Ensures that department complies with hospital established policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.
• Ensures adequate equipment and supplies for department.
• Develops and maintains established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
• Ensures compliance to all health and safety regulations and requirements.
• Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.

Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:

• Bachelor’s degree of science from an accredited college/university with a major in Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology, or Biological Science or chemistry, or Bachelor’s degree with Major with a combination of 30 semester hours in biology and chemistry and math, or Official evaluation report for non-US college/university transcript.
• National certification as a generalist Medical Laboratory Technologist/Scientis t, categorical in the specialty of the operation , or Specialist : Examples : ASCP Technologist/Scientist Certification: Blood Bank (BB), Chemistry (C), Cytogenetics (CG), Cytologist (CT), Hematology (H), Histotechnologist (HLT), Microbiology (M), Molecular Biology (MB), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS).ASCP Specialist Certification: Blood Bank (SBB), Chemistry (SC), Cytology (SCT), Cytometry (SCYM), Hematology (SH), Microbiology (SM), Molecular Biology (SMB).ASCP Technician: Phlebotomy Technician (PBT), Histotechnician (HT) ABHI Specialist Certification: CHT (ABHI) or CHS(ABHI).
• Must qualify as high complexity testing personnel under CLIA regulations where required.

Experience/Skill:
Required:

• 5 years clinical or anatomic laboratory experience.
• 1 year of experience in a clinical or anatomic leadership role.
• Knowledge of evaluation methodologies, data analysis, i.e., statistics, QC/proficiency testing, and analytic root cause analysis.
• Must possess the interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written) needed to provide effective participative leadership and for successful communication with all levels of staff.
• Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft products.

Preferred :

• Experience with regulatory compliance processes, such as CAP and Joint Commission regulatory processes.
• Demonstrated proficiency with laboratory information systems.

UMass Memorial Medical Center lab supervisor fo r Core Lab testing- all campus locations, direct reports as assigned. Provides cross campus coverage and is willing to travel between affiliated locations based on operational need. Supports off shift, weekend, holiday, and on call coverage as required to maintain continuous operational coverage of areas as assigned. Provides flexibility in scheduled work hours and assignments to meet departmental, operational, and patient care needs to support workload, meeting coverage, and staffing demands. Functions as essential employee, reporting to work during inclement weather or emergency events in accordance with policies and procedures.

Technical expertise in Hematology, including Sysmex; Chemistry, including Roche, and Blood banking experience preferred. Experience working independently as Core Lab generalist preferred.
