Job summary

Atlas seeks a Lab Quality Manager to lead the Quality Management System for its Geo and CMT laboratory, ensuring QA/QC of reports and compliance with accreditation standards. You will drive standardized procedures, accreditation readiness, and continuous improvement while collaborating with the Lab Manager and project teams.

You will oversee testing activities, mentor technicians, and ensure data integrity and timely delivery of compliant reports for infrastructure projects.

Qualifications

  • 8–10 years of lab experience with quality systems and accreditation.
  • Experience with TxDOT, ASTM, and AASHTO standards.
  • Ability to lead and mentor lab staff.
  • Strong data analysis and documentation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees proper use of testing procedures and equipment per standards (ASTM, AASHTO).
  • Develops and maintains the lab's Quality Management System and procedures.
  • Performs independent QA/QC reviews of soils, concrete, asphalt and aggregate reports.
  • Coordinates with Lab Manager and engineers to meet deadlines and contracts.
  • Conducts quality audits and tracks corrective actions to resolution.
  • Owns accreditation strategy and prep for external audits.

Job Description

The Lab Quality Manager leads the Quality Management System (QMS) for a Geo and CMT laboratory, performing independent review and QA/QC of test and inspection reports and ensuring testing, calibration, and reporting practices are accurate and compliant with accreditation standards. This role combines technical expertise and quality systems leadership to drive standardized procedures, accreditation compliance, and continuous improvement within the lab, working alongside the Lab Manager. Your work helps ensure materials used in infrastructure projects meet required standards—protecting communities and the people who use them.

Core Responsibilities
  • Oversees and direct team members on the proper use of testing procedures and equipment to ensure work is completed in strict accordance with the scope of the job and work expectations. Provides oversight and leadership on the sampling and testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, masonry, reinforcing steel and asphalt in accordance with standardized procedures and test methods such as ASTM, AASHTO, etc.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains the lab’s Quality Management System, ensuring testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt and reinforcing steel is performed consistently in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, and other applicable standards.
  • Performs independent review and QA/QC of soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregate test and inspection reports prior to client issuance, verifying data accuracy, calculation integrity, and compliance with applicable test methods and project specifications before sign-off.
  • Partners with the Lab Manager, PM/CMT Engineer, and Scheduling to ensure quality requirements are integrated into lab deadlines, deliverables, contract requirements, and client expectations. Champions a strong quality and safety culture within the lab.
  • Conducts periodic quality reviews and internal audits of lab activities, testing results, and documentation. Analyzes trends in test data and audit findings to identify systemic issues, and tracks corrective and preventive actions to resolution.
  • Owns and continuously improves the lab’s implementation of Atlas quality procedures and Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring consistent application and compliance.
  • Oversees quality-focused training for lab technicians, identifying skill gaps and ensuring competency in testing standards, documentation, and quality procedures.
  • Owns the lab’s accreditation strategy and process in compliance with AMRL, AASHTO, CCRL, and applicable state DOT accreditation requirements, including managing proficiency sample programs, preparing the lab for external audits, and serving as the primary point of contact during accreditation reviews.
  • Serves as backup for the Lab Manager, dispatching testing and inspection requests and covering lab testing and project administration duties.
  • Provides project management and delivery support to the PM/Engineer as needed, assisting with project administration and coordination tasks.

  • Requires 8-10 years of relevant lab experience, including experience with quality management systems and accreditation processes (AMRL, AASHTO, CCRL, or state DOT).
  • Relevant lab testing and QC certifications from ACI and TxDOT are a plus.
  • Well-versed in TxDOT, ASTM, and AASHTO lab testing standards and reporting systems
  • Proficiency in Metafield or similar construction materials testing report management tools
  • Collaboration and teamwork, Ability to mentor and train others
  • Organization skills and ability to multi-task
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Adept at growth mindset (agility and developing yourself and others) skills
  • Skill in reading (technical or scientific) documents, such as technical manuals, Test procedures, and project plans
  • Skill in writing concise, logical, grammatically correct technical reports
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Driver's License Upon Hire Required and Ability to travel to project sites as needed

About the Job
  • Employment Type: Full-time
  • Compensation: $70,000 - $90,000 annual salary
    The expected salary range for the position is displayed in accordance with the state’s law. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience.
